Pixel 6 Pro review (11)

Google surprised us last week with the announcement of Android 12L, a follow-up version to its just-released OS update focused specifically on folding phones and tablets. Although you can't get it on your phone right now, it won't be long until a public beta is ready and available to Pixel owners. If you're curious when — or if — your phone will receive it, here's what we know so far.

Google lifted the veils off Android 12 recently, and we totally understand why you'd want to try out the freshly-baked software on your phone. However, if you've already burnt your hands trying to install the developer preview on your OnePlus 9 series phone and bricking it, you might be happy to learn that OnePlus has released new builds that hopefully won't cause any troubles.

Android 12 Beta is bricking OnePlus 9 phones — here's how to fix it

The fix is easy, but you need to get back to Android 11

At Google I/O today, we got to meet Android 12's hot new interface. Not only would Pixel phones get an early taste, but phones from 10+ other OEMs, including OnePlus, are lining up to give their own users a peek at the new 12 Beta. While OnePlus is making it available for both the new OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro, it sounds like some users are facing pretty severe headaches — here's how to get your phone fixed if testing the beta goes wrong.

Second Android 12 Developer Preview rolls out for Pixels today

Some previously "hidden" features are live in DP2

Android 12 Developer Preview 2 is here, giving us our second glimpse at the in-development state for the next version of Android. As you should expect, Google's announcement only highlights a handful of developer-facing changes with this latest release, but we're sure there are plenty of other exciting tidbits hidden inside — especially given the sheer volume of features spotted in-development with DP1. While we all wait for our phones to update, let's dig through the changes Google is willing to talk about.

The first Android 12 developer preview is here. As usual, we've dived into all the changes present in this latest release — so far, anyway. But there are still plenty of other questions you might have, like: Should I install Android 12 now? What's the difference between the "previews" and the "betas?" When will Android 12 land? And how many updates will it get before it is released? Here are your answers.

Android 12 has a hidden One UI-inspired system settings UI

Activate it via an ADB command

Google published the first developer preview of Android 12 this week, and XDA's Mishaal Rahman has already been digging deep into the code to unearth new features that aren't meant for our eyes just yet. It looks like Google is working on a Samsung One UI-inspired redesign of the system settings that moves interface element closer to the thumbs, and you can activate it via an ADB shell command.

The Android 12 Developer Preview lands today! Breaking with the expected schedule, Google has just pushed out our very first taste of the next version of Android, available now for the Pixel 3 series, 3a series, Pixel 4 series, Pixel 4a series, and the lonesome Pixel 5. Developers that this release actually targets can also get their Android 12 on via Android Studio's emulator.

Pixel Launcher gets a 4x5 grid size option on Android 12

A little less dense horizontally

Android diehards love their customization, and Android 12 seems poised to introduce several new system-level ways to make your phone uniquely yours. One such (minor) way: the Pixel Launcher supports a grid size of four by five icons in the first developer preview, a previously unavailable option.

Android 12's system settings are looking a little blue

Hinting at expanded theming options?

The system settings are feeling a little blue on Android 12. While not too much has changed when it comes to the general layout and iconography, the background has gained a light blue look, visible in all panels except for the top level menu. Coupled with the light blue notification shade (or a dark blue variant when using dark mode), we presume that Google might be prepping some theming options.

Together with the first Android 12 Developer Preview just earlier today, Google also published its schedule for Android 12 releases going forward. We can look forward to three total Developer Previews (or two more, counting today's), plus four Android Betas, all set to a monthly release cadence, with a final release set for some time after August.

Android 12 Developer Preview 1 is here, but it's not exactly easy to get. Because this first Android 12 version is meant for developers, Google isn't just making it an opt-in process like later beta versions will be. But, if you're willing to take the risk (and not get upset if and when things go wrong), here's where to get it.
