Some gamers still grieve the demise of Google Stadia, their memories of the platform marred by neither its sloppy launch nor unceremonious funeral. Remaining cloud gaming factions from Sony, Microsoft, and Nvidia continue to spar with each other, while working on strategies to seize as much of the market as possible. Amidst the fray, this week Amazon Luna is expanding its cloud gaming platform to owners of recent LG smart TVs.

Before Stadia's execution date was set, its biggest competitor was Amazon Luna. This service worked slightly differently, offering games through subscriptions rather than one-time purchases like Stadia. Now, Amazon Luna has partly alleviated this shortcoming by partnering with Ubisoft to allow Ubisoft store purchases to be played through Luna without the need for a Ubisoft+ subscription.

Inevitably, game streaming will be the future of video games. While it's still early days for the tech, there's no doubt Amazon's Luna platform is one of the better services, thanks to a solid pricing structure where you pick and choose the genres you enjoy, as well as dependable streams that deliver quality graphics up to 1080p. But if you wanted to jump into the game streaming platform with the official Luna Controller, this would typically run you $69.99, which is nothing to sneeze at. Thankfully today is Black Friday, and Amazon is running tons of sales, including a fantastic 43% discount on the Luna Controller for the lowest price to date.

Amazon Luna and Google Stadia are game-streaming services that offer an escape from expensive consoles and gaming computers. The two corporate juggernauts have access to extensive cloud computing power and utilize it to power their services. Their relationship is akin to Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's Playstation consoles, two companies offering a similar gaming service in different ways.

With so many cloud gaming services out there, it can be tough to know which will suit your needs, especially when each and every one offers a different method of monetization. This is why I've gone hands-on with Amazon's Luna, to report on my findings so that anyone curious about the game streaming service can decide for themselves whether its features are robust enough for their needs. So with Prime Day almost upon us, when Amazon will assuredly discount a selection of smart TVs that offer access to the Luna app, let's dig into Amazon's Luna to see how it stacks up.

Amazon launched its Luna cloud gaming service in 2020 to compete with Google's Stadia. It debuted as part of a rising tide in popularity for cloud gaming that also saw Microsoft introduce its own xCloud game streaming. Luna hit the scene with a singular advantage — since Amazon also owns Twitch, eventually integrating the pair seemed like a no-brainer. Now Luna's getting ready for its biggest test yet, as access opens to users all across the US.

If you haven't been able to try out Amazon's cloud gaming service yet, you're in luck. Nearly every big gaming company has some kind of cloud service right now, but Amazon's has involved jumping through a few more hoops than most, with invites and then an early access program. But during the upcoming Prime Day sale (which is taking place from June 21 to 22), you'll be able to have a go at Luna without the need for an invitation.Amazon will offer Prime members a 7-day free trial, after which it'll cost $6/month to continue the membership. You can also decide to pay more for the $14.99/month Ubisoft Plus subscription that will give you access to a selection of the company's games, including Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Far Cry 6.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 series, thanks to the Snapdragon 888, performs exceptionally well — it can play any Android game you throw at it. But if you were looking to indulge more in the cloud-gaming side of things, you'll be happy to know that these phones are now officially supported by Amazon Luna.It was only a few months ago that Amazon's cloud gaming service debuted for Android phones. The list, at launch, included a few devices from Google, OnePlus, and Samsung, including the Galaxy S10, S20, Note10, and Note20 series.[EMBED_TWITTER]https://twitter.com/amazonluna/status/1372631122849505283?s=20[/EMBED_TWITTER]Since Luna is still in early access, you'll need to request an invitation. The service offers two tiers currently. There's a $5.99/month Luna Plus tier that offers games like Metro Exodus, Control, and GRID. If you're looking for a larger selection to choose from, you can opt for the $14.99/month Ubisoft Plus subscription.Luna doesn't have a dedicated Android app, so you'll need to access it from the Chrome browser (version 86 or higher). It's becoming easier to get in on the Early Access program

Amazon Luna is creeping up on Stadia when it comes to availability. The company has announced that the platform is now available for anyone interested who owns a Fire TV, departing from its initial invite-only approach to distributing the service. Luna still remains in its Early Access phase, though.New customers can download the Luna app on their Fire TV and sign up for a 7-day free trial without having to wait for approval. This broadens the service's availability and makes it much easier to get in on the action, especially if you already own a compatible Fire TV. Amazon has also announced that its controller can now be purchased without an invitation on Amazon.com/LunaController. But you can just connect your existing compatible Bluetooth controller to your Fire TV if you already have one.Amazon's approach to game streaming is a little different from Google's. Instead of an optional Pro tier with occasional free games and 4K streams, Amazon offers a flat fee that gives you access to a selection of games. There's a $5.99/month Luna Plus tier and a $14.99 Ubisoft+ channel that gives you access to many premium Ubisoft titles. The service is also available on select Android phones as well as on Windows, Mac, and iOS.Source: Amazon
