Amazon Fire TV Devices Updated To Version 5.2 With Viewing Restrictions And New Alexa Features

Amazon has announced that the Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, the company's two streaming devices, are receiving updates to the latest version of the software, 5.2.

The main thing version 5.2 brings is viewing restrictions, which enable blocking of content in Amazon Video and 'selected third party apps,' although Amazon has declined to list which third-party apps are included. Other new features include Watch Live for video subscriptions, so if you have an add-on subscription from Showtime or Starz, content can be watched at the same time as it's broadcast. Alexa is also seeing some improvements; she can now be asked for local restaurant, shop, or business information with the new Local Search feature.

Amazon Officially Announces The New Fire TV With 4K Playback, As Well As An Updated Fire Stick With Voice Commands

Guys, when Amazon announces stuff, they announce the hell out of some stuff. Like, who cares about subtlety? Not the folks at Amazon - they'll just go crazy on a Thursday morning and announce like nine new products all at once. I like their zeal.

Not only did they take the wraps off of a few new Fire tablets, but they also announced the recently-rumored Fire TV with 4K playback for $99, a new "gaming edition" bundle of said Fire TV for $140, and an updated Fire TV Stick with voice controls for $50. That's a lot of stuff. Let's dig in.

[Deal Alert] Best Buy Is Currently Offering The Fire TV Stick For $25, Matching Amazon's Recent Prime Day Sale Price ($15 Off)

Like the Kindle tablets that came before it, Amazon's Fire TV Stick is built on top of a customized version of Android. You won't find the Play Store and Google apps on your television screen if you pick one up, but it's still a good way to get your hands on apps. Then, of course, there are the ever-so-important TV shows and movies.

Best Buy is currently offering the Fire TV Stick for $25. That's $15 less than the product's usual price. This also matches the amount Amazon was selling the media dongle for during its big Prime Day sale in mid-July.

GameFly Streaming Service Comes To Android (Sort Of) As An Amazon Fire TV Exclusive

There are multiple ways to stream high-end games to your Android device. There's NVIDIA's GRID, OnLive (edit: Oh, right, Sony bought OnLive), and something thrown together by a guy on the XDA Developers forum. Maybe you want more options. Well, if you own an Amazon Fire TV, you can now add GameFly to this list.

The GameFly streaming service derives from the company's acquisition of Playcast. A look at the latter's website gives you an idea of what you can expect from the experience, as the interface matches the one Amazon has shown off alongside the GameFly Streaming app already uploaded to its app store.

Amazon Fire TV Stick Lightning Review: It's Simply Unbeatable For The Price

The set-top box market has basically exploded over the past couple of years, with companies like Google, Roku, and Amazon leading the way. The good news is that there's no indication it's going to slow any time soon; in fact, it keeps getting better. Amazon's Fire TV stick is the perfect example of that – it's essentially a Fire TV crammed into an HDMI stick, but at a fraction of the price. I kinda fell in love with Fire TV back when I reviewed it, but for $25-40, Fire TV Stick is the best streaming "box" that you can buy for the money.
