Amazon debuts new Echo Show 8 smart display, noise-reducing earbuds, and more

When it comes to selling what it makes, Amazon's Echo speakers are the company's bread and butter. But those speakers were, at one point, experiments and they've had their time to grow — just as much as that AmazonBasics microwave turned into a smart oven, but whatevs. So, we're here to talk about the new Echo Show smart display, wireless earbuds, a lamp, a pair of sort-of-smart glasses and a sort-of-smart ring.

We're officially into fall, if you can believe it. Is it too early to start shopping for stocking stuffers? We've got plenty of good candidates this week, including Amazon's Echo Wall Clock (I don't know how big your stockings are), a pocket-friendly power bank from Anker, and a bunch of accessories by Aukey.

My Echo is the one that says 'Bad Motherfucker:' Samuel L. Jackson will be an Alexa voice

Amazon just reported that Alexa is now available on over 85,000 devices, a 41% spike from May, from 9,500 brands — up another 28.3% from four months ago. With those kinds of numbers, it is paramount that more thought be put into a user's sense of privacy and security when they own an Alexa product. Today, the company announced a number of improvements, features, and skills it has worked towards in the past year with some new features available from today — notably including the coming addition of Samuel L. Jackson as a voice for Alexa.

Facebook refreshes Portal family, adds new Mini model and camera-only option for TVs

Bastion of privacy Facebook remains ridiculously insistent on wanting a presence in your home — something with microphones and a camera involved. So, it has come up with a new range of Portal smart displays and video chat peripherals for 2019. These include an update 10" design, a new 8" screen, and Portal TV, what's essentially a camera bar that plugs into your TV set.

Beware: Using Google Assistant, Alexa, or Siri to call businesses could connect you to scammers instead

Voice assistants make our lives easier for the most part. Instead of having to get up to turn on the lights, we can simply ask them to do it for us. Similarly, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa allow you to call businesses via voice, with no need to input a phone number anywhere. There are risks associated with blindly calling unknown numbers, though. According to the Better Business Bureau, some scammers have apparently gamed Google and Amazon's phone number ranking systems. Unsuspecting users could end up talking to an imposter instead of the desired business.

The Amazon Echo Show 5 is down to $65 ($25 off)

At the end of May, Amazon introduced a new 5-inch smart display with hopes to satisfy buyers looking for a smaller device than the Show but bigger than the Spot, and also to compete with Lenovo's Smart Clock. The initial $90 price was also reasonably positioned in comparison to other smart devices, but just two months after its release, the Echo Show 5 is currently on sale for $65, which is almost 30% off.

Sony now sells the Xperia 1 with Amazon apps for $850

Sony released its super-tall Xperia 1 last month, but the $950 price tag is a lot to ask, especially when many of the phone's standout features (like the 4K screen) don't add much to the experience. However, if you don't mind a few extra pre-installed apps, an Alexa version of the Xperia 1 is now available at a lower price.

Lenovo Smart Tabs can place Alexa video calls with latest update

With its two-in-one Smart Tabs, Lenovo had the brilliant idea of combining a regular Android tablet and a smart display into a single device. When paired with its accompanying dock, the device transforms into an Echo Show, letting you interact with Alexa without having to purchase an additional product. Unfortunately, the Smart Tabs couldn't place video calls until now, but a new update letting you do just that has just been released.

Ecobee Switch+ smart light switch with Alexa is down to $45 ($35 off)

When I set up my smart home infrastructure, I went on an uncontrollable buying spree to make sure almost everything from the lights to the vacuum was connected. The Ecobee Switch+ is a neat all-in-one smart switch that comes with Alexa and a bunch of sensors, to avoid multiplying the number of smart things you buy. Given the number of things it can do, its initial $80 price was reasonable, but it's now dropped another $35, making quite an exciting deal.

Maximus's dual-camera video doorbell keeps one eye on people, the other on packages for $199

For a long time in the phone industry, it's always seemed like two cameras (or more) were better than one. When it comes to doorbell cameras, perhaps it should be the case as well. A few months ago, ODM Kuna announced that it had launched a reference design for a dual-camera doorbell and that it would go commercial in the spring. Well, it's quite late at this point, but Kuna brand Maximus has finally brought its Answer video doorbell to market.
