Google's third Pixel Feature Drop is here with new safety features, Recorder integrations, tools to manage sleep, and more

Google's third Pixel Feature Drop update has been announced with a handful of new features and tweaks for the company's line of phones. While we might yet find more minor changes hiding inside when it rolls out, we're told there are four broad categories of new features Pixel owners can look forward to: New Adaptive Battery tweaks to stretch out battery life, Recorder app integration with the Google Assistant and Google Docs, tools to better manage your sleep, and new personal safety features including crisis alerts and a "safety check" feature that notifies emergency contacts if you don't respond to a scheduled check-in.

Nokia phones stop aggressively killing background processes to manage battery life

Early this year, DontKillMyApp.com started shaming Android OEMs who were killing background processes left and right on their devices, regardless of how useful or not that strategy was. At the time, Nokia phones were the top offenders due to their "Evenwell" solution packages. Now, several months later, Nokia dropped to the third position after Huawei and Samsung, and it turns out that is due to a change of tactics and a reliance on Android Pie's Adaptive Battery instead.

DontKillMyApp.com shames OEMs that needlessly kill useful background processes to save battery life

The days when third-party battery-saving apps were necessary to hit a satisfactory number of hours off a single charge are long behind the vast majority of Android users, thanks to improvements like Doze and Adaptive Battery. But in some cases, this measure of progress has become something of a Pyrrhic victory, with useful background processes carelessly destroyed and developers taking the brunt of user ire. In fact, they're going on the offensive with a new informational website where the most flagrant OEM offenders are shamed and users and developers are educated.

Android P will have a new Adaptive Battery setting for extended life

Earlier today, a handful of Android P DP2 features leaked out which included mention of a new Adaptive Battery setting. The new feature will allow you to "limit battery for infrequently used apps" (an incredibly technical description, if I've ever heard one). Ostensibly, the phone prevents apps from doing... something by learning how you use them over time and limiting some undefined aspect about them.

[Update: Video] Android P DP2 possible leak shows navigation gestures, home button that becomes a scrolling bar, adaptive battery, more

We're taking this leak with a grain of salt: it's either a perfectly executed set of Photoshopped images (along with very accurate timestamps) or the real deal. Supposing that it's real, Gabriel Bryne, whom I can't find anything tangible about, has somehow managed to get his hands on the Android P DP2 beta and installed it on his Pixel. He then did what any sensible man with a super secret Android release would do and took a bunch of screenshots and images of the interface.
