Amazon's own Fire TVs are ready to find a place in your living room

Upping the standards for basic home entertainment quality

By

After their announcement last month, Amazon's first run of its own-make Fire TV Omni- and 4-series panels are on sale today. They're not splashy OLED panels and the sound systems aren't hi-fi, but they do make an affordable starting point for most people building out their home entertainment systems.

If you're all-in on Amazon's Alexa assistant platform, or you're looking to start, we've got a hell of a deal for you. Today only Best Buy is selling a 55-inch Toshiba 4K TV, powered by Amazon's Fire TV platform, for just $379.99. Not only is that $100 off, but they'll throw in a freebie Echo Dot third-gen, a $40 value.

Grab a Sony OLED TV with Android TV for $700 off, its lowest price ever

The Bravia A8H is just $1200 at Amazon and Best Buy

Android TV is great. OLED TVs are great. If you want to get them both in the same package, your options are limited: the only widely-available brand with OLED options that also uses Android TV as its smart TV interface is Sony. Today you can grab a rare discount on a 55-inch Sony TV, packing the Android TV interface built in, at both Amazon and Best Buy. The 55-inch Sony Bravia A8H, a 4K OLED television, retails for about $1900. That's considerably higher than comparable OLED TVs from LG and Vizio ... but then, Sony TVs tend to have quite a markup. Today Best Buy and Amazon are selling the 55-inch A8H for $1199.99, the lowest price we've seen for this particular model by a whopping $300 margin. You can typically find a 55-inch OLED from a cheaper brand for around $1000-1100, if you're patient. So this deal really only makes sense if 1) you want one right away or 2) you want one that runs Android TV out of the box, saving you the cost of adding a kick-ass NVIDIA SHIELD set top box to your home entertainment center. Even so, it's a pretty fantastic discount if you're a fan of Sony as a brand, Android TV as a platform, and OLED as a display tech.Buy: Amazon, Best Buy

The Android TV interface gets a long-overdue 4K upgrade

The latest beta brings a handful of less obvious tweaks

During the excitement of a new Android release, it's easy to forget that phones aren't the only things getting upgraded. While previous betas for the A12 version of Android TV were a bit underwhelming, the latest version includes something that users have been wanting for quite a while: a true 4K interface, to match all of those super-cheap 4K TVs on the market.

Toshiba doesn't have a Community star to sell its new TVs, but it's hoping it can attract you with a few cool features. Its newly launched series comes in various sizes and offers the Fire TV experience with a voice-enabled Alexa remote. No matter which size you choose — 43”, 50”, 55”, 65”, or 75” — you'll get a 4K LCD panel that's Dolby Vision and HDR10 certified. The bezels are appreciably thin, and there's support for DTS: Virtual X which should add some depth to your media experience. With Fire TV onboard, you get the regular smarts, including support for just about every streaming service available for you to dive into. These TVs will also be able to show video feeds from compatible doorbell cameras on top of the content you're watching. Simply ask Alexa to show you a preview of the camera, and a PiP window will serve your needs.

Buying a new television is cheaper than ever these days. Constant sales make it easy to pick up a set with an excellent display for not a whole lot of money, and most TV makers now include half-decent software to get your favorite shows and movies up and streaming. Sony is one of the few manufacturers to include Android TV as its OS of choice, which bundles dedicated apps from the Play Store alongside casting with your smartphone. If you're looking to buy a massive screen for your living room, Sony's 85" X950H is back to its lowest price at Amazon.Make no mistake — even on sale, this is far from a budget set. The X950H is Sony's best TV outside of its OLED sets. It's also one of the best you can buy, a display that's perfect for everything from movie marathons to hiding behind the couch while playing Resident Evil VIII next month. Android TV with Google Assistant makes for a great way to watch all the subscription services you keep forgetting to cancel, but if you'd rather plug in your own streaming device, you'll find four HDMI ports to support every gadget lying around your house.

4K televisions are everywhere these days, and if you're aiming to get the best looking screen that's also super high-res, OLED is where it's at. An OLED TV offer improved viewing angles and unbeatable black levels over standard LCD sets thanks to its lack of backlight. Although OLED TVs are still priced higher than their standard counterparts, prices have continued to grow more affordable throughout the last year. Sony's 65-inch A8H is one of the best OLED televisions you can buy today, and it's finally broken under the $2,000 price point for the first time since Black Friday. The A8H includes all the bells and whistles of any top-tier TV, including support for HDR and Dolby Vision, a 120Hz refresh rate for smooth gaming, and Android TV built-in. It has four HDMI ports, three USB ports, and is compatible with both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa for voice control. If you're willing to pick one up from Amazon, the company sweetens the deal with an included Deco Gear bundle: a 31" soundbar, a wall mount, some Velcro cable management, a surge protector, and two six-foot HDMI cables, all thrown in at no extra cost. Make sure to clip the coupon on Amazon before checkout to save an additional five percent as well.Buy: Amazon, Best Buy, B&H

Sony makes some of the very best Android TVs on the market, and not many of them top the X750H. The 75-inch 4K behemoth has been selling for about a thousand bucks this year, but today, you can get it for $829 — $129 off its street price. The X750H has three HDMI ports and supports HDR — although not Dolby Vision (you'll need the pricier X800H for that). Having Android TV built in, it's compatible with the Google Assistant and can be cast to like any other Chromecast target.

The sharp drop in TV prices in recent years is staggering. To wit: today, Best Buy is offering a gigantic, 75-inch Android TV for just $600, about $200 under what it goes for.

Do you suddenly have room for a 75" TV in your home? Humongous sets never seem to lose that much of their value sitting on store shelves, but TCL's 75" 4-Series 4K Android TV just did — it's on sale now at more than 25% off.

Xiaomi launches its first Dolby Vision-enabled QLED 4K TV in India

Getting into premium Android TV territory but without the hefty price tag

Typical to Xiaomi’s approach, its TV range in India has so far focused on budget offerings, massively undercutting the traditional players. After capturing a major chunk of the local smart TV market, Xiaomi is now stepping up to a slightly more premium space with its latest QLED model that aims to offer premium picture quality and design, but with pricing that's still affordable.

Amazon discounts 50" 4K Insignia Fire TV Edition to all-time low of $250 ($100 off)

A 43" 1080p Toshiba Fire TV Edition is $180 if you're looking to spend a little less

Amazon has some "Prime Exclusive" deals on two of its Fire TV Edition-branded televisions: one a 50" 4K unit from Insignia, and the other a 43" 1080p one from Toshiba. Both are discounted by $100, which means sales prices of 9.99 for the Insignia and 9.99 for the Toshiba. These TVs were both released in 2020. The Insignia is equipped with a 50" 4K display, HDR capability, DTS Studio Sound, and Fire TV functionality built in. Meanwhile, for $70 less, the Toshiba has a 43" 1080p display, DTS TruSurround, and Fire TV built-in. I'd argue that the Insignia is the much better deal here, but both the Insignia's $249.99 and the Toshiba's $179.99 represent all-time low prices.

If you're after a really big Android-powered 4K TV, Sony is offering some healthy discounts for today only at Amazon and Best Buy. The headline deal here is the 75" X750H for $998, which is a whopping $500 off the going price for this TV. There are also discounts on the 65" X900F and 85" X800H.Here are the deals in question:

They say the bigger the TV, the better the quarantine. Okay, okay, I say that. But seriously, since movie theaters probably won't be safe for a while, upgrading your home theater setup is the next best thing.  And today only, Amazon is offering up both 55" and 65" 4K Ultra HD Smart TVs made by LG for some super low prices starting at just 6.99 — a $462.01 savings. Both sets feature high definition 4K picture quality with NanoCell technology to ensure vibrant colors and detailed images. They also have local dimming control to enhance contrast and black levels. These TVs come packing both Alexa and the Google Assistant thanks to LG ThinQ AI technology. I'm sure there's some fun to be had in trying to make them interact with each other. Maybe you can start a virtual assistant war inside your own television set?

Sony's 65" X950G 4K HDR TV drops to a stunningly low $998 on Amazon

The first time we've seen this TV dip below four figures

If you're after a nice 65" smart TV and don't mind having last year's model, Amazon is currently offering the Sony XBR-65X950G for just 8. That's $400 to $600 cheaper than any other store carrying the 65" X950G and represents a $600 savings over the next-gen 65" X950H, which is already at its own all-time low.The X950G is equipped with Sony's flagship X1 Ultimate processor, a 64.5" 3840x2160 HDR-capable LED panel, four HDMI inputs, and built-in Android TV. Looking at reviews, RTINGS praised the brightness level, out-of-box color accuracy, and motion handling, but didn't so much like the viewing angles (the 65" model doesn't get Sony's X-Wide Angle tech). TechRadar liked the X1 Ultimate chip, Netflix Calibrated Mode, motion handling, and 4K upscaling, but had qualms with the sound quality, 4K and HDR black levels, as well as a Netflix audio bug. Of course, you should do your due diligence before purchasing, but $998 for this TV is cheap any way you slice it.

Several Sony X900-series 4K HDR TVs are currently discounted at Amazon and Best Buy, ranging in price from $1,169.99 for the cheapest 65" TV to a whopping $3,798 for the flagship 85" X950H unit. If you're in the market for a gigantic, high-end Android TV, there are some all-time low prices here. The X900s offer 4K HDR with Sony's X1 processor, Android TV built-in, full array LED functionality, and HDMI 2.1 compatibility coming soon. For those wondering why one might spend the extra money on an X900-class TV versus, for instance, the cheaper Sony X800 models, comparisons show that the X900 displays offer a crispier image with less motion blur, higher brightness, improved performance in dark rooms, and faster response times. A commenter below mentions that some units of the 65" X900 are prone to the "prison bar" effect, so keep that in mind.As for the difference between the X900 and the X950, the X950 is a newer model with the X1 Ultimate processor, better audio built-in, better viewing angles at the expense of some contrast, and a nicer-looking remote. Whether or not that's worth the extra dough is up to you. Keep in mind, however, that the X950s are missing HDMI 2.1.Here are the deals:
