Google Assistant may support 38 more countries and 17 more languages in 2018

Google's Assistant and Assistant-powered hardware are a huge convenience, but the limited markets and languages for both have been anything but convenient for many. While Google has been slowly rolling out new countries for Home hardware and more languages for the Assistant over the last year or so, it looks like the company is gearing up to expand its footprint significantly. In a leaked slide from a presentation at the DNI (Digital News Initiative) summit in Amsterdam, Google revealed a literal map of its upcoming plans.

Samsung's Bixby-powered smart speaker reportedly arriving in first half of 2018

Bixby is Samsung's home-grown virtual assistant that debuted on the Galaxy S8. It's still far behind Google Assistant in terms of functionality and language support, but Samsung has mostly continued to stick with it (they finally allowed users to disable the button a few months ago). According to a new report from Bloomberg, Samsung is working on a Bixby-powered smart speaker, and it's coming in the first half of next year.

Android TV app for Comcast Xfinity coming in 2018, but only for Sony TVs at first

Over a year ago, Comcast revealed that it was working on an Xfinity app for Android TV. It was part of the 'Xfinity TV Partner Program,' designed to make its television service available on smart TVs and internet-connected streaming boxes. That way, you wouldn't have to lease a cable box (unless you didn't want TV congesting your home internet network) - just install the app and start watching content.

Palm brand will return in 2018, with devices built by TCL

Palm's early smartphones and PDAs were a staple of the late 90s and early 00's. After the release of Apple's iPhone in 2007 and Android in 2008, Palm began selling smartphones with its new webOS operating system. The company was purchased by HP in 2010, but after poor sales, HP discontinued webOS and all Palm products in 2011.

TCL acquired the rights to the Palm brand from HP in 2011, and promised to "re-create a new company in Silcon Valley" to develop new Palm devices. Those plans seemingly fell through, but now TCL is promising that new Palm devices will arrive in 2018.
