There is no denying that Amazon's Echo devices and Alexa voice assistant are a huge success at this point. What started out as a weird little cylinder you can command to play music and ask a few questions has now become an entire line-up of devices, an ecosystem that has engendered many integrations from thousands of companies worldwide, and has kickstarted an entire product category and tech section that was nearly non-existent before it.
But since Amazon doesn't divulge any sales numbers for Echo devices, all we've had to go with are estimates from statistics companies or vague numbers from Amazon itself. Read More
It's a good milestone day for Android's side-projects and apps. Earlier we reported that the Android Wear app had reached 10 million downloads on the Play Store and now we're seeing the same number for the Android Auto app.
10 million downloads since March of 2015 is a nice number, especially considering that the app is geo-restricted and you either have to be aware that it works on phones without needing a compatible car or have to have purchased a new compatible car or heads-up unit in the past 2 years or so to know about it. By comparison, the Android Wear app has been available for about 3 and half years, is available worldwide, and the cost of entry is much lower (if you don't take into account those who use the Auto app as standalone). Android Wear has been out for several years now, though it can't be considered a commercial success. After all that time, the companion app has just reached 10 million downloads on the Google Play Store. That being said, that figure doesn't allow us to draw any conclusions about sales figures. We love celebrating big milestones here on Android Police and the latest is for Google's data-friendly version of YouTube, YouTube Go, which has reached 10 million downloads today.
As a bit of history, Go was announced in September of 2016 but was said to be rolling out gradually in India. It became available on the Play Store, though unofficially and only in beta, in February of 2017. We grabbed the APK back then to let you all get a look at it, but it was only in April that Google made the announcement official. Fast forward to August and YouTube Go launched in Indonesia, then November when it came out of beta in time for Android Oreo Go's official launch. Read More
It can take quite a while for an app to reach a significant milestone. That is, if your name isn't Nintendo. The company's new Animal Crossing game slipped out a day early back on November 21st, and now, in just 23 days, it's garnered over 10 million installs on the Play Store. That's a huge number. The response to Google Allo has been... cold, to put it gently. For every user who appreciates the clean break Google made with its past messaging apps and the mobile-first approach it took, there are dozens if not hundreds of users who are vocal about every single feature that Allo is missing and that needs to be implemented before the app is viable as a messenger for them.
That cold response is behind Allo's sudden extinction from the Play Store's top lists and the super slow rise of its download numbers. A couple of weeks ago, David pointed out that while the app reached 5M downloads in 5 days, it still sat between 5M and 10M two whole months later, signaling a really slow uptake on the app after the initial rush was over.
