Someone had already turned the Wing's smaller screen into a stand-alone phone, and now we're seeing it adapted as a custom gaming console.

It was the right decision in many ways, as there's a real lack of competition in the US market at the high-end. Despite quitting the market, the company did not give up on its existing set of devices and even updated a bunch of them to Android 12 earlier this year. While the South Korean firm may be done with smartphones, it has seemingly not given up on tablets as it has announced the LG Ultra Tab for its home market.

However you felt about its phones, the buying public wasn't all too thrilled about them: the division had spent the previous five years losing money, quarter after quarter, and that dragged the rest of the company down on the balance sheet. Now, as the conglomerate reports second quarter earnings for 2022, LG seems eager not to look back.

For every new company like Nothing that launches its first phone, it feels like we lose one of the older players in the market, and back in 2021, LG felt compelled to pull the plug on its smartphone business for a bunch of reasons — including some disappointingly low sales. However, shuttering a multi-billion-dollar enterprise isn’t as simple as flipping a light switch, and the company ended up scrapping several in-development prototype phones in the process — selling some of that hardware to employees for dirt-cheap prices. Now, over a year later, one of the very cool-looking LG Rollable prototypes has resurfaced online to show its stuff.
LG: one of Korea's famed dynastic conglomerates and a globally known brand for durable goods and consumer electronics. It was pretty good at making phones for a time — people might most fondly remember the Chocolate from 2006, but the more obscure and dirt-cheap KP100 candybar from 2008 outgrossed it in sales. Then came the groovy 2010s: the company went nuts with freaky form factors, fancy accessories, and a gutsy urge to stretch the limits of what a slabby-looking thing could be and do. Sure, one thing wrong after the other ultimately led to the mobile division's demise in 2021, but I think its efforts have been maligned with a broad brush — much as I revere AP alum Ron Amadeo, his LG obituary for Ars Technica straight-up trashed the company at every turn. Now, I'm no fanboy, but I do want to exhume the company's body of work from the dumpster for a more balanced, maybe more romantic, but definitely personal eulogy.

Although LG exited the smartphone market in 2021, there are still plenty of people who love and use LG's phones. The company has a generous update policy to those who own an LG smartphone, so things could have been much worse. However, unfortunate handset owners subscribed to T-Mobile were left with non-working phones for a good part of the day, with an error message reading "LG IMS has stopped” that repeatedly popped up. The good news at this point, though, is that T-Mobile rolled out a fix for the issue.
