The future we were promised some 30 or 40 years ago has yet to come to fruition. Flying cars haven't gained any sort of real traction, and talking robots appear to still be several years away from becoming commonplace in our everyday lives. It's not a total wash, though, as there are some products available today that do make you feel like you're living in a slightly more futuristic world, such as the Echo Show 15 from Amazon. This smart display features an impressive 15.6-inch screen, it has Fire TV built-in, and it comes with an Alexa Voice Remote. It also has a host of features that can make your life easier, and right now it's 30% off.

Amazon's Echo Show smart displays are the perfect gateway into the convenience of the Alexa voice control ecosystem. The Echo Show 8 represents the best all-around and most versatile choice for most people, as it has a good blend of screen resolution, sound quality, and camera performance. Plus, its 1280 x 800 display is sharp for its 8-inch size, and the 13MP camera is great for video calls.

Amazon's popular Ring Video Doorbell lineup, which includes the terrific Ring Video Doorbell 4, makes it easy to see who rang the doorbell and even talk with them from your phone without ever having to open the door. But don't fret if you sat your smartphone in another room and only have an Amazon Echo Show nearby. You can still view your Ring doorbell's live feed and chat with any visitors directly from that device. Easy peasy.

The smart speaker comes in all shapes and sizes and is a fundamental part of the modern smart home. Amazon's Echo Show series of smart displays are generally pretty small and fit for a limited, but meaningful purpose: to get you quick, glanceable information from wherever you are in your house — whether you're at your bed or in the living room. You generally wouldn't see yourself sitting down for a session of "House of Dragons" with one of them, but there's one special exception that the company is now making a case for.

I've been a fan of smart home tech for a while now. In the mid-2010s, my small apartment was already equipped with a first-generation Google Home and a half dozen smart lights, donning the colorful arrays found in so many mid-20-year-olds' homes. Since then, my collection has evolved substantially, adding Echo Dots, Ring cameras, Google Home Minis, Google TV, and smart light strips. However, the collection felt a bit more complete, when I was fortunate enough to add and review the Echo Show 10, which is currently only $180 thanks to Amazon Prime Day.

Amazon Echo Studio vs. Amazon Echo Show 10: Which should you buy?

Smart speaker or smart display? That is the question

Amazon has been all over the smart tech market in recent years. Ever since the first Echo device brought virtual assistants from your phone to the home, the eCommerce tech giant has made its Alexa-compatible smart home devices a notable priority, updating them frequently and improving dramatically on the original iteration. In fact, the Echo lineup has branched out so much that many of the devices offer widely differing features that cater to the specific needs of potential users. The Echo Show 10 and the Echo Studio are two prime examples on the premium end of the Echo spectrum.

Amazon is often regarded as one of the companies that democratized voice assistants and home automation, thanks to Alexa and its range of Echo devices. Today, the company's Echo Show smart displays let people control their home, video call loved ones, play content, and check their upcoming appointments a glance. These devices are designed to be placed on a flat surface, though, making them harder to use in some rooms. To solve this issue, Amazon is reportedly developing a new device that can be mounted on the wall.
