Monthly security patches aren't always the most exciting, but as the Galaxy S23 series is still relatively new, these updates can include significant bug fixes and feature improvements. The April 2023 patch happens to be one such update, including a boatload of enhancements for the camera system.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra's rear cameras.

The update started hitting devices during the last few days of March, weighing in at a hefty 936 MB on our unlocked UK S23 Ultra. Strangely, the change log is a bit generic, only listing the usual "device stability improvements." Thankfully, a Samsung community moderator has posted an extensive list of chances. The post is in South Korean, so we've translated a list of highlights below:

  • You can delete photos that have just been taken before they finish processing.
  • Autofocus has been adjusted so that when the shutter button is pressed, the photo can be taken before the focus is set correctly. If you wish to revert this change, you can do so in Camera Assistant by enabling focus priority.
  • Improved sharpness/flicker and added a notice when using the ultrawide lens indoors with low light if Super Steady is on.
  • Improved stabilization when recording 1080p 60fps.
  • Several bug fixes and improvements.

Some of these changes are quite significant, especially the tweak to autofocus that aims to reduce shutter lag. It'll be interesting to see how much improvement has been made and what we can expect to further change in Samsung's next update.

The April 2023 patch is reaching other devices in addition to the S23 series, and you can see the complete list below, which we'll keep updated as it expands.
