Prepare to meet the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 a day after the Galaxy Z Fold 4
Yet another brand plans to announce a foldable this week
This week is set to go down as the busiest one for foldable smartphones this year. We know of at least two brands planning to unveil a total of three new foldable smartphones. Now, a third brand has officially confirmed its intentions to vie for your attention and the foldable phone market share (if you live in the right place) — Xiaomi says it will debut the Mix Fold 2 later this week.
Xiaomi's gorgeous Mi Mix 4 proves why it's become the largest smartphone brand in the world
Featuring a ceramic unibody design and an edge-to-edge curved display
It's been a while since Xiaomi introduced a mainline Mi Mix phone. Once lauded for pushing forward bezel-less smartphone design that is now standard for the industry, the most recent device in the lineup is now nearly three years old. After launching a spin-off earlier this year, the Mi Mix Fold, Xiaomi has returned with an all-new entry in its style-focused series.
Out with the old, in with the new: LineageOS cut support for Android 9 Pie earlier this year, and to make up for the loss, the open-source project has just released version 18.1 based on Android 11. It comes with official support for about 60 phones and tablets.
Xiaomi's first foldable could be the Galaxy Fold competitor we've been waiting for
The company also unveiled a retouched brand identity
Following Samsung, Huawei, Motorola, and Co., Xiaomi has finally joined the foldable club. During the second part of its annual mega event, the company introduced the Mi Mix Fold, its very first folding phone. The manufacturer went with a more traditional design (if you can call it that already) first established by the Galaxy Fold, with a big 4:3 screen on the inside and a smaller 27:9 display on the outside for use like a regular smartphone.
LineageOS 17.1 arrives on the ROG Phone 2, Sony Xperia XZ2, and other phones
Everyone gets Android 10!
Slowly but surely, the LineageOS custom ROM is bringing unofficial Android 10 to a wealth of phones and tablets. LineageOS 17.1 (based on Android 10) recently arrived on the OnePlus One, and now the ROM is available on several other phones, both new and old.
The LineageOS project is busy as always, adding support for more devices and implementing new features. The last time we covered the popular custom ROM, official builds for the OnePlus 6T and 7 Pro arrived, and there have been plenty of additions (or re-additions, in some cases) since then.
LineageOS is one of the best custom ROMs around, with official support for dozens of phones and a few unique features. The last time we covered the project, it started offering builds for the Redmi Note 7 Pro, Huawei Honor 5X, and a few others. Since then, a whopping 13 phones are now receiving Pie builds, but there's some bad news for Xiaomi device owners.
LineageOS is one of the most popular custom Android ROMs around, with somewhere around two million active installations. Since the last time we covered the project, nine more phones have been updated to the Android 9 Pie branch, and the Nvidia Shield Tablet has made a comeback.
Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has revealed its latest flagship phone and, as we've come to expect, it's stunning. The Mix series has always been about pushing the boundaries of what's possible, and the Mi Mix 3 is no different. Just as Xiaomi already teased, the front of the device is nearly bezel-less thanks to a sliding mechanism that hides the dual front-facing cameras (24MP + 2MP).
March 27 is shaping up to be an interesting day. Huawei already announced it would be the day it'll launch the Huawei P20 in Paris and now Xiaomi is stealing its thunder with its very own high-profile announcement: the new Mi Mix 2S will be unveiled at the same date.
When Xiaomi released the Mi Mix last October many of us thought it was nothing more than a fancy concept phone. Its improbably slim bezels, giant curved-edge 17:9 screen, and ceramic back didn't seem like something that should be real. Xiaomi even referred to it as a concept phone, but the remarkable device had a price tag (around $516) and could be bought by anyone. The Philippe Starck designed phone won many plaudits for squeezing an enormous 6.4" display into a tiny frame, and it looked certain there would be a follow up this year. That time has now come.
I find myself constantly impressed with the LineageOS community. Formed from the remains of CyanogenMod, the project has continued to add support for new devices and maintain most of CM's library. Since our last post, Lineage has added support for a handful of Xiaomi phones and updated the Wi-Fi Nexus 9 to LOS 14.1.
TWRP has long been the leading custom recovery for Android smartphones. You can flash ROMs, manage local files, install custom themes, and backup/restore your whole device. TWRP is also great because it's easily ported to other devices, and as evidence of that, the project has begun supporting three new phones.
The Xiaomi Mi MIX is a phone many have been dreaming of; it manages to cram a 6.4" display into a footprint barely larger than the 5.5" Pixel XL's or iPhone 7 Plus's. That's definitely impressive, but what about the strength of such a phone? Given Xiaomi's poor track record against the wrath of Zack from JerryRigEverything and the minimal bezels surrounding the screen, you'd be entirely forgiven for thinking the Mi MIX is a weak device. However, you'd also be quite wrong.
At an event in Beijing today, Xiaomi announced what it called a "concept phone" but that pretty much appears to be real and alive given the price tag, release date, and working prototypes that everyone got to play with. The selling point? No bezels. Well, there are some bezels, technically, but they barely count as such.
