Sony Unveils Its Own Pair Of Honeycomb Tablets - The S1 And S2

The tablet news just keeps on coming. In the past few days, we've already caught wind of two Honeycomb tablets from Lenovo, and now Sony is officially revealing the S1 and S2 tablets. The event is being live blogged by the Wall Street Journal here, but thanks to an official press release we have plenty of details on both the tablets. First up, the S1:

  • 9.4" display
  • Android 3.0 Honeycomb
  • "Off-center of gravity design" (check out this mockup for an idea of what this means)
  • NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor
  • Front and rear cameras
  • Wi-Fi and 3G/4G connectivity

And the S2:

  • Two 5.5" 1024 x 480 screens
  • Android 3.0 Honeycomb
  • NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor
  • Front and rear cameras
  • Wi-Fi and 3G/4G connectivity

Both tablets will also be joining the Xperia Play as PlayStation Certified devices, as they will be able to play PS1 games using on-screen controls.

Hot on the heels of the mock-up leak for the PlayStation certified "S1," Engadget has caught wind of another Android-powered Sony tablet currently in the works. Continuing with the theme of wacky design, the device is rumored to be a clamshell-style, dual-touchscreen device. Each display will measure 5.5 inches, and when closed, the device has a cylindrical form factor reminiscent of the giant crayon-shaped calculator I had when I was 5.

Sony's tablet discussions never picked up much steam. Sony's new PlayStation Suite isn't the PlayStation Phone (or the Xperia Play) we were expecting, but it's arguably something even better for those of us who love gaming but hate the idea of giving up our current Android device(s).

Sony claims that PlayStation Suite will offer "legendary original PlayStation content" and says it will be a "cross platform, cross device" PSOne emulator. In reality, it's limited to Android 2.3 and beyond - a version of Android only one currently available handset runs (and it's not Sony's own Xperia X10).

Sony Ericsson has confirmed that it will not be updating its Xperia X10 line of smartphones to Android 2.2 Froyo. So, owners of the Xperia X10, X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro will be stuck on Android 2.1 Éclair for the foreseeable future. However, Sony Ericsson has promised to provide some minor software updates, with features such as multitouch, later this year.

It's not the PlayStation-related Android announcement we were hoping Sony would make, but the Official PlayStation app is still (sort of) intriguing in and of itself. Version 1.0 of the app will be coming soon to both our beloved Android Market and the iOS App Store, though we here in the States will be left out of the fun initially. Looks like New York's the place to be tonight, especially if you're an Android fan looking for a Google TV built by Sony - the company has just announced the "Sony Internet TV", which will be available in four sizes: 24", 32", 40", and 46", priced at $599.99, $799.99, $999.99, and $1,399.99 respectively. While each model does offer unique specs (all of which are listed in the press release at the end of this post), all will come with:

  • Google TV built in
  • four HDMI input ports alongside four USB inputs
  • a 1080p LED display (with the exception of the lowest-end 24-inch model, which will feature a plain CCFL backlit LCD panel, with the 1080p resolution remaining unchanged)
  • an Intel Atom processor
  • access to the Android market in early 2011

Sony also announced that users will be able to control their Internet TV with the RF QWERTY keyboard (pictured above) as well as with an Android app that will be available from the Market "later this fall."
