If you look at the hero image of this post, you'll notice that, despite running basically the same software, my Galaxy S6 has a slightly different set of notification toggles than my S6 Edge. Specifically, the Edge is missing private mode. Both devices are missing the toggles for mobile data and hotspot, too, which they originally shipped with. But... why?
At this point, the frank answer is that no one knows. In a problem that appears to be affecting a huge number of Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge owners, several notification quick toggles in varying combinations seem to simply be evaporating out of the drawer. Read More
T-Mobile is first out of the gate with an official update to Android 5.1.1 for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. You can head to the update menu right this minute and start downloading the 630MB OTA.
The Galaxy S6 comes with support for wireless charging, but if you're going to do (mostly) without cables, you're going to need a compatible pad. Samsung will gladly sell you one for $50, which some would consider a bit much to drop on an alternative way to power their device. Fortunately, you can currently get a third party option on Amazon for 1/5th the price.
Ionic Pro's Galaxy S6 wireless charging kit is priced at $20.95, but you can get it for $10.47 by entering the coupon code 2O5I8F45 at checkout.
The box comes with a wireless charging pad, a 2A wall USB adapter, and a microUSB 2.0 cable. Read More
The Galaxy S6 has only been out for a few months, but we're already seeing some solid deals on the international variant around the internet tubes. Today it's popped up on eBay Daily Deals for a mere $579.99. That's $50 less than the last time we saw it.
While it's not a particularly exciting set of updates, the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are hugely popular handsets, so any OTA update is news in one sense or another. Today, Verizon's versions of the twin-sixes are getting an update to build VRU1AOD5, which seems like a bug fix and feature-tweak release.
Here's the full changelog.
- Drawing feature has been added to Photo Editor
Voice Call (HD Voice)
- ‘Add Call’ button has been moved to app bar beside MORE.
- Bluetooth button has been moved from MORE to on-screen.
- Emergency call button has been added.
- Various call performance improvements.
A couple weeks back, we reported on a widespread problem with OK Google "From any screen" (AKA "OK Google Everywhere") on the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. Namely, it was gone. While the hotword still worked from the Google Now Launcher and other third party launchers with such functionality hacked in, most S6 and S6 Edge owners were unable to use the "from any screen" functionality because the option simply disappeared. Remember those hints of a "Google Workshop" with user-customizable phone cases with matching wallpapers that Android Police showed off back in April? Those were really cool, huh? Well, this is not that. Unless your name is Skrillex.
Yes indeed, the well-known dubstep perpetrator Skrillex now has his own collection of phone cases on sale in the Google Store. At the moment the "Live Case" comes in three designs, available for the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Galaxy S5, Galaxy S6, and Galaxy Note 4. Read More
Did you know that your choice of color when buying a cell phone is indicative of your personality and character traits? No, really, it's totally based on real psychology - it's not just made up. Well, let me be more precise: I'm not just making it up. "World-renowned British Psychologist Dr. Donna Dawson" might just be having a go at you when she describes the exclusive new colors for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. These are quotes from an actual Samsung blog post, and not, I assure you, adaptations from a nineteenth century horoscope.
People who opt for Samsung’s Blue Topaz Galaxy S6 are likely to be more self-confident, fastidious, discriminating, sensitive, exacting, and intuitive...
Have a Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge? Great! Want to use OK Google's hotword functionality from anywhere but the Google app or the Google Now launcher? Not great!
You see, for the past month or so since the S6 launched, there's been a slight issue with OK Google Everywhere on the Galaxy S6. Specifically, it just stops working completely. All the options except "From the Google app" disappear, voice model training goes away, and you can only use the 'OK, Google' hotword from the Google app or the Google Now Launcher (which is, essentially, the Google app). When it comes to device skins, dbrand is my go-to company. After going hands-on with some of the company's Nexus 6 offerings back in February, I was extremely impressed with the quality - both materials and precision cutouts. I highly recommend checking them out if you're interested in giving your gadgets a new look. (And if you missed out on the Nexus "X" symbol promotion, well, I'm sorry.)
This contest is now over.
The final results are listed below. If you've won, you will be contacted in the near future. Congratulations!
