Here's something you already knew about the Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge+ before today's announcement—both devices are expensive. Samsung charged a ton for its massive phones before, and nothing about introducing more premium materials into this year's iterations says cheap. So you're looking at parting with uncomfortably close to a grand by the time taxes are factored into the equation.
AT&T, for example, wants around $740 for the Galaxy Note 5 and $815 for the S6 Edge+. You can divide those up into however many payments you want using AT&T Next plans, but it still amounts to a lot of money. Read More
Today, as we expected it would, Samsung announced two new phones: the Galaxy Note 5, and the Galaxy S6 Edge+ (what a name). We were at the event and spent a few brief moments with each of the devices, got some impressions, and took some photos. So naturally it's time to talk hands-on with the Note 5 and Edge+.
If there's a main takeaway from my time handling these two devices, it's that they were what I expected. That's not a bad thing, though - Samsung has carried over the interesting refreshed design language of the S6 and S6 Edge to the new phones - the Edge+ is curved on the front, and the Note 5 is curved on the back. As expected, Samsung has announced a pair of new smartphones at its Unpacked event—the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+. The Note 5 is being presented as a perfect phablet for multitaskers and the S6 Edge+ as an ideal device for multimedia. Read More
A couple of days ago Evan Blass posted what looked like a render of the upcoming Galaxy S6 Edge+ - Samsung's new flagship expected to be announced at the Unpacked event on August 13th - wrapped in a gadget that doubled as both a phone case and a Blackberry-style physical keyboard. We passed on the story at the time, but more evidence has come to light that makes it seem a bit more plausible. Here's the original tweet from Blass:
Today Dutch tech blog GSMInfo.nl noticed an odd entry on a local web retailer: a listing for what looks like an official Samsung keyboard for the S6 Edge+. Read More
"It isn't a real smartphone leak until we see press renders of the device by Evan Blass," that's how the saying goes, doesn't it? Well, Evan has tweeted an image of what seems to be the Galaxy Note 5 posing with its pen, right next to the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus.
The image confirms what we have already seen, more than once, of both devices. They'll have the same screen size, at 5.7" with a 2K resolution, and will likely be decked with an Exynos processor (though there's a rumor the S6 Edge Plus may run a Snapdragon), 4GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal memory on the lowest tier. Mobile Fun, an online retailer based in the UK, has posted several photos of what it claims are the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge+. Judging from everything we've heard about these two devices, the photos appear to be legit. Ultimately what we see are two handsets that look like larger versions of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.
One photo shows the S6 Edge+ running Android 5.1.1. Its model number is SM-G928A.
Mobile Fun provides very little information in the post. These photos seem to confirm images the retailer recently shared from case manufacturers, a source that isn't always reliable. Read More
Several FCC filings for the upcoming Galaxy Note 5 and all-but-confirmed Galaxy S6 Edge Plus were located today, including Verizon and AT&T models of each. The N920V (Verizon Note 5), G928V (Verizon S6E+), N920A (AT&T Note 5), and G928A (AT&T S6E+) all have publicly available test information, furthering rumors that the devices will launch earlier than normal.
Normal, by the way, tends to be October here in America. The Galaxy Note 4's street date last year was October 17th in the US and in many countries around the world. This time, the rumor is that a mid-August launch will follow with retail availability just a week later in many markets, and that is quite a shift. Read More
A rumor has been circulating that Samsung will launch the Galaxy Note 5 earlier than usual this year. Instead of debuting at IFA in Berlin sometime in September, it looks like the device will make its first appearance in mid-August. Well, now we have dates. SamMobile seems pretty confident that the Note 5 will get announced on August 12th before hitting store shelves on the 21st. And it won't be alone. The rumored Galaxy S6 Edge+ is apparently coming along for the ride.
Despite the differences in name, think of both devices as larger versions of the S6 and S6 Edge. Read More
