Samsung Access phone subscription launches in the US: Get an S20 with insurance and 1TB cloud storage for a monthly fee

Samsung is rolling out its phone-as-a-subscription Samsung Access service here in the US. Starting as low as $37 a month for the baby S20 model, Samsung Access includes the phone, Samsung Premium Care device protection, 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage, and access to Microsoft 365 Personal. Although there's a pile of terms and conditions associated with it, the service also lets you upgrade your phone every nine months — or earlier, if you'd like to pay more.

Samsung announces ruggedized Galaxy S20 Tactical Edition, with 'stealth mode' (lol it's airplane mode)

Samsung announces ruggedized Galaxy S20 Tactical Edition, with 'stealth mode' (lol it's airplane mode)

Samsung has just announced a "tactical" version of its Galaxy S20, optimized for use in "any tactical environment." When it comes to specs, it's mostly the same Galaxy S20 you already know (and love?), with a few oh-so-tactical twists, like DualDAR NSA-level encryption, "tactical" radio support, and a super sneaky "stealth mode" that turns off all RF broadcasting and disables LTE — a very tactical airplane mode.

Verizon getting mmWave version of smaller Galaxy S20 next month

Verizon getting mmWave version of smaller Galaxy S20 next month

When the Galaxy S20 series first landed, the smaller version of the phone had one feature omission compared to the bigger Ultra and Plus: It lacked mmWave support for 5G. But, we knew that a Verizon-specific version of the phone with mmWave was coming eventually, and now we have a firm time frame. Verizon will release the new phone under the long-winded Samsung Galaxy S20 5G UW name on June 4th for a cool thousand bucks, with pre-orders starting on May 21st at 3:01 AM ET through Verizon's site.

More Samsung Galaxy flagships are already getting May's security update

As a long-term Samsung user, I've witnessed first-hand the Hollywood-style comeback Samsung has made in terms of how its phones get updates. Gone are the days of waiting almost a year for significant version changes, or being several months behind on security patches. Not only have Samsung devices been receiving updates faster than ever before, in some cases, Samsung has even beaten Google to the punch. It's now done so again, with Samsung starting its rollout of May's security patch for the S20 series.

The 5 worst things about the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

We've already run down the five best things about the Galaxy S20 Ultra, so now it's time to look at the ways in which it disappoints. It's not unreasonable to expect a $1,400 phone to be damn near perfect, but the S20 Ultra sadly has a few negatives points that bring its overall score down. You can check out our full review to see what Ryan thought about it, but here's a summary of the least appealing aspects of the S20 Ultra.

The 5 best things about the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

The 5 best things about the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

The Galaxy S20 series has been far more controversial than the S10 lineup it succeeds, thanks to a stratospheric price tag and camera system that doesn't quite hit the mark. You can find our review of the S20 Ultra here, but today I'm going to outline my five favorite aspects of this expensive, premium phone. I've had mine for over a month now, and it's been my daily driver since it arrived. As such, I've been able to experience everything the S20 Ultra has to offer, and what it's like to live with over a longer period.

Galaxy S20 sales numbers in the US could be even worse than expected

Galaxy S20 sales numbers in the US could be even worse than expected

According to data provided to PCMag, Samsung's Galaxy S20 sales figures in the US are looking positively grim. While the coronavirus pandemic has undoubtedly had a big impact on smartphone sales in America, I don't think anyone fully expected the level of damage these numbers suggest Samsung's flagship phone series has sustained.

Specifically, the data shows that current estimates have the Galaxy S20 series selling in under half the quantity the S10 series did during its first 7 weeks on the market. In nearly two months of retail availability, the S20 family has likely failed to even break the million unit mark according to analysis firm M Science's analysis.

Should you buy a OnePlus 8, or a Galaxy S20?

Should you buy a OnePlus 8, or a Galaxy S20?

OnePlus' newest phones are more expensive than ever, and even with a more "affordable" variant, that definitely doesn't mean budget phone anymore. The OnePlus 8, not even, the Pro, is a $700 phone. That means it's going up against other premiere 5G handsets like the Galaxy S20 on both features and price — the 256GB OnePlus 8 costs just as much as the base Galaxy S20 right now.

With the phones clearly going after a similar part of the market (at least for the moment), which should you get? That's what we'll try to answer here.

Galaxy S20 review: After a month in my pocket, I think this is the one to buy

Galaxy S20 review: After a month in my pocket, I think this is the one to buy

The Galaxy S20 is Samsung's most expensive "entry level" flagship to date. When a phone starts at a thousand dollars, it's easy to begin questioning just how much smartphone you need, versus what you may just want (and let's be honest, we're all guilty of upselling ourselves sometimes). But as the US begins the long transition to 5G cellular networks and smartphones begin to support them, it's becoming valid to ask just when an upgrade is necessary, and just which phones will be suited to best handle the next few years of mobile technological disruption.

While we think the Galaxy S20 Ultra is simply too much money and too much phone for most people, the base model Galaxy S20 offers a far more approachable size and price point, while losing very little functionally in the process.
