Samsung is staying true to tradition this week as it releases the September 2021 security patch before any other company, in some cases before August had even finished. This update includes a new version of One UI for the Galaxy Z Flip and Z Flip 5G, bringing features from the new Z Flip3 to the older devices internationally.

Although many of our readers want maximum functionality from their phones, others don’t want to drop anywhere close to four figures on a flagship phone. That's why the Galaxy A-series has been so successful for Samsung. Nearly any shopper can walk into their carrier's store and leave with a device a Samsung phone matches their budget. Of course, as you drop further down in price, there are more compromises. The Galaxy A12 is a phone of compromises, but are they the right ones?

Samsung has consistently been ahead of the curve with security updates this year, and that continues now as the July 2021 patch hits the Galaxy devices series internationally. As the month rolls on, we're seeing it hit more and more devices.

Long story short: Only on sale

Although its high-end devices tend to get the lion's share of attention from the media, Samsung offers a ton of downmarket options, too — many in the sub-$250 space, like the Galaxy A21. When we reviewed it last year, we concluded that, while it wasn't really groundbreaking option in the affordable space, it was a fine pick if it met your budgetary and performance needs. But is that still true today?

Samsung already announced its international lineup of 2021 A-series devices — some last year, some last month. They look promising, with sleek designs, capable specs, and some serious improvements over last year's selection. But it turns out the US selection will look a bit different at launch. For one, no fun colors: the whole series will initially only be available in monochrome colorways stateside. There are also currently no plans to launch the A72 in the US. Still, there's plenty for American customers to be excited about — and soon.

Samsung’s budget Galaxy A12 and A02s are all about big screens and hefty batteries

Even though the high-end Galaxy S21 is right on the horizon, Samsung is seemingly inclined to kick off 2021 with two new entry-level offerings in its Galaxy A series — the Galaxy A12 and A02s. The two phones try to appease a specific market segment that values big-screened endurance champs at the lower end of the price spectrum. However, you can't get your hands on them yet as their release dates are a bit far out.
