I know what you're thinking - Continuum? Wtf is that? It's that novelty phone released back in November of '10 with two screens: the actual display, and the "ticker" underneath.
When Samsung threw their big U.S. Galaxy S kick off party earlier in the summer, it was announced that each of the four major carriers would be selling their very own version of the hardware. But, in a twist of M. Night Shyamalan-ian proportions, they announced a second Galaxy S device for Verizon.
It's been less than two weeks since the phone launched, but the Continuum's source code has already been thrown up on Samsung's Open Source Release Center. Regular users won't get much use out of it, but developers may be able to, and it should certainly help out with the development of custom ROMs for the device. Perhaps the awesome folks over at XDA could even find some interesting uses for the second "ticker" display? If you want to check it out, search for "SCH-I400" in the source link.
It's definitely starting to feel like holiday season is winding up - a ton of devices that we've seen in the pipeline previously are now making it to market at long last. Let's take a look:
The Samsung Continuum, announced earlier this week, is going up for pre-order tomorrow. This Galaxy S series phone is the first Android device with a secondary ticker screen providing access to updates, a-la Android top notification bar. Some consider it a gimmick, some think it could be really useful, but you can decide for yourself after watching this official intro video, complete with overly cheerful (with the exception of the guy who lost money in the stock market) folks that apparently have 0 time to look at their actual phones and rely on the tiny 1.8" display instead. The ticker jumps in and saves the day, making everyone even more cheerful, no matter how impossible it may sound. If only those naïve people knew that they were getting a phone with Bing instead of Google...
Right on cue, Verizon and Samsung have announced the Samsung Continuum, the newest member of the Galaxy S line of devices. Surprisingly, it looks like all the rumors had everything dead on (a rarity in the Android community). The details:
Engadget's landed a classic Blurrycam shot of Verizon's internal system showing the prices for a handful of current and upcoming devices. Namely, the Motorola Droid Pro, and the still-unofficial Droid 2 Global and Samsung Continuum.
Samsung's got an event coming up on November 8th. Some of you out there may be pretty convinced at this stage that we'll be hearing of a phone named something like "In Excess" at this event, but that's all up in the air right now. What is pretty certain, however, is that we'll get an announcement of Samsung's previously-pictured Continuum, a dual-screen take on the Galaxy S line.
Right alongside the launch of the Galaxy Tab, Verizon prepared to launch two Android-running phones on November 11: the ticker-equipped Samsung Continuum and Motorola's latest lower-end handset, the Citrus.
The Fascinate hasn't even been on Verizon's shelves for a month yet, and it looks like they're already planning on adding another variant of the Galaxy S to their lineup: the Continuum (SCH-i400). Technical details on the phone are light at the moment, but we can see in the images that it's rocking two displays - the main one (up top), as well as a small screen below the capacitive touch buttons. Engadget claims that both screens are OLEDs, with the bottom screen referred to as the "Ticker." Evidently, the Ticker displays date and time, as well as notifications and RSS updates - very, very cool.
