Oppo uploads then deletes surreal, hilariously bad ColorOS ads

Yesterday, Oppo tweeted a pair of ads for ColorOS, the company's take on Android, that were absolutely fascinating. The low-budget English-language spots saw users of Oppo phones waxing poetic over ColorOS, talking about it like a romantic partner — an already uncomfortable premise amplified by just how poorly crafted the videos were. This morning, the videos were deleted — but you can bet your bottom dollar we saved them.

Oppo's new 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 promises a full charge in thirty minutes

Earlier today, smartphone maker Oppo announced three new charging technologies it plans on using in upcoming products: a 30W VOOC 4.0, Wireless VOOC Flash Charge at 30W, and a tremendous 65W SuperVOOC 2.0. If history is any indicator, we'll probably see them licensed to companies like OnePlus for even faster "Warp" charging in the future.

Oppo Reno2 series unveiled in India: Three phones with four rear cameras each

Oppo's move into the Indian market continues, and today the company formally revealed the Reno2 which it's been teasing for the last month. It's also just one part of a whole series of Reno2 phones, which includes two cheaper MediaTek-powered devices. All of the new phones sport four cameras, with the Reno2 ostensibly delivering up to "20x" zoom, though most of that is courtesy of software — sadly, it doesn't have the 6x periscope optical zoom benefits of the older Reno Zoom.

Oppo is already teasing the Reno2 as specs leak via Chinese regulator

The Oppo Reno only landed this April, but already the company is teasing the Reno2, with an even greater emphasis on cameras. This time around the phone will have a crazy-sounding "20x" zoom, plus an "Ultra Steady Mode" for stabilized video and an "Ultra Dark Mode" for extreme low-light camera performance. Sadly, it doesn't reach that huge number with one of those periscope-style zoom cameras like the Reno 10x Zoom had. The base Reno2 features a 2x optical lens paired with software zoom.

[Update: Official tweet] Oppo's new 'Waterfall' display has the most extreme curved edges we've ever seen

How many ways can you build a rectangle? When it comes to smartphone displays, it can get quite excessive. Chinese manufacturer Oppo recently revealed its work on a panel with a highly-translucent portion containing a phone's front cameras. Now, the company is circulating images and video of what it calls a "waterfall display" — basically a curved edge screen, but with the curves on steroids.

The latest tech trade show, MWC Shanghai, is just getting started and one of the first exhibitors is Chinese tech manufacturer Oppo. It didn't talk about a phone at its keynote — its Reno phones are getting some extended spotlight here — but it did bring us closer to the supposed holy grail of a full-body smartphone display by demonstrating an under-display selfie camera.

Xiaomi turns OnePlus's 'Flagship Killer' slogan against it... right next to a OnePlus billboard

Xiaomi turns OnePlus's 'Flagship Killer' slogan against it... right next to a OnePlus billboard

We've just covered Xiaomi catching up with Oppo by presenting its own under-display camera on Twitter right after the former showed off its prototype, but the internet is not the only place Xiaomi is attacking its rivals. First, the company started advertising its new Redmi K20 as the "Flagship Killer," the exact marketing term OnePlus aggressively used in its early years. Then, the firm put up billboards right next to OnePlus advertisements around India with a bold statement: "Starkly superior to the latest One."

Under-display cameras are coming, but prepare for potato quality photos for a few years

Under-display cameras are coming, but prepare for potato quality photos for a few years

Notches have been a design abomination ever since they were introduced, cutting into usable display area for no other reason than to minimize bezels. However, we knew from the start that notches were never here to stay – they're an interim solution meant to bridge the industry's move towards completely obstruction-free displays on the front of phones. The same is true for finicky sliding mechanisms for front cameras that come with disadvantages such as limited water resistance and yet another point prone to failure.
