It's true that the initial Android 12 rollout for these devices hasn't been entirely bug-free (with even the announcement post warning about bugs), but users can find some comfort in knowing that they're much better off than the buggy mess OnePlus 9 owners had to put up with. Thankfully, the company seems keen on polishing things up, and the latest update to start arriving for the OnePlus 8, 8 Pro, 8T, and 9R claims to do just that.

If you've been binging your favorite Netflix show on a recent phone from OnePlus or Oppo, you might have been missing a lot. The Android app has to certify that the devices it's running on (and the software they're using) are of sufficient quality to enable HD playback. That probably has more to do with anti-piracy measures than performance, but that doesn't matter a whole lot to customers who are stuck with lower-quality video.
OnePlus appears to have silently and slightly upgraded some OnePlus 8Ts. Reports indicate that some recently purchased versions of the phone are now shipping with LPDDR5 RAM, a bump over the LPDDR4X RAM originally included and which OnePlus advertises. While the newer memory is technically "faster," the bigger effect is on enthusiasts that might be rooting and ROMing.

Some of you may remember as far back as two weeks ago when OnePlus was caught throttling the performance of the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro based on the app that was currently running, altering performance pretty drastically. One benchmarking application even considered the practice "benchmark manipulation." But OnePlus tells us it's heard the complaints, and it plans to address them with a new option in an upcoming OxygenOS 12 update, letting customers choose whether to enable or disable this "optimized mode."

OnePlus’s raison d'être has changed. It’s not committed to making flagship killers anymore — it’s unapologetically shipping $1,000 phones. But the company doesn’t want to put all its eggs in one basket so it's hedged this change in direction by introducing the Nord series and now, the OnePlus 9R that goes on sale today.
After months of rumors, the CEO of OnePlus officially confirmed the existence of the more budget-priced OnePlus 9R to the Indian press last week. Announced alongside the 9 and 9 Pro, the 9R is launching exclusively in India, starting at ₹39,999. That's equivalent to about $550 USD, and 20% less expensive than the base model of the OnePlus 9.

There’s a lot more on the cards than just the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro
As is customary with OnePlus phones, an abundance of leaks hasn’t left much for the company to reveal today. However, we still look forward to OnePlus announcing its 2021 flagships with its own stylistic flair at its online event, and we can always hope for a little something extra that we don’t already know. At the very least, we'll get confirmation of pricing for the new products.

OnePlus has already confirmed that the 9 and 9 Pro are coming on March 23rd, as well as the company's first wearable, the OnePlus Watch. But today CEO Pete Lau spoke directly to an Indian news network about a hitherto unknown variant: the OnePlus 9R. This less expensive option is so far confirmed only for the Indian market, with a focus on a lower price and gaming performance.
