While the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro received Android 10 in September, the company has been very quiet about when the latest major release would hit its first 5G phone, the 7 Pro 5G. CEO Pete Lau finally took to the OnePlus forums with information on the update, but he's bearing bad news. Due to "more rigorous tests, debugging and optimizations" than anticipated, the manufacturer is expecting to launch Android 10 in the first quarter of 2020. Read More
OnePlus' Open Beta program gives device owners the ability to try out bleeding-edge software before it's ready for the masses. Those of you with a OnePlus 7 or 7 Pro can now give Open Beta 10 a spin, which has a few key improvements — including the Live Caption feature that came to Pixel devices last year. Read More
The Android 10 update for the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G is now officially rolling out. Previously spotted hitting some devices in the UK a bit early, OnePlus today announced the full changelog for the 5G-powered phone's new Android 10 build, making good on its earlier promise to deliver the update in the first quarter of this year, though we haven't spotted any signs yet that the update is landing for Sprint versions of the phone (yet). OnePlus has had a difficult time keeping up with system updates and security patches recently, having just updated its 7 Pro with the Open Beta 9 January security patch. Today, OnePlus began rolling out patches to the 7, 7 Pro, and 7T Pro; 7T Pro users have been waiting over 2 months (!) for an update, and while this latest patch is rolling out incrementally to its users, it's expected to be widely available in the coming days. OnePlus is usually on the ball with system updates, but the last few months have been rough across the board — Android 10 for the OP6 and 6T was continuously delayed due to bugs, and several of the company's phones are months behind on security updates. Now the 7 Pro is finally getting a newer security patch, but only for owners willing to use beta software. Read More
When the first OnePlus 7 Pro renders trickled out, showing off what appeared to be a pop-out camera mechanism, even I was critical of the concept. External moving parts on a device that suffers as much abuse as a phone seemed like a design that was destined to fail, even in just a mechanical sense.
Well, I'm not afraid to say that I was entirely wrong. OnePlus' pop-up selfie camera has proven to be a fantastic idea, and I'm upset it looks like OnePlus' next high-end "Pro" phone won't get one. Read More
OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro owners that jumped onto the Open Beta release cycle have a new build that's rolling out today. Open Beta 8 includes a handful of fixes for issues you might have experienced on Beta 7, including accidental touches in pockets and a fix for some crash/black screen problems some ran into with the camera. Security patches have also been bumped to December 2019. Read More
As 2019 ends and we enter a new decade, I felt the story of OnePlus deserved a bit more examination. In an email interview with CMO Kyle Kiang, I probed the history of a company that is often as shocking in its successes as it is in its marketing misfires. As it crests its sixth year as a smartphone vendor, it's more competitive than ever, coming a long way from the days when it could barely manage to build enough $349 OnePlus Ones using a tightly controlled and very annoying invitation system.
OnePlus has also transformed in ways I don't believe any of us predicted, going from a scrappy, value-first smartphone maker to a legitimate competitor in a field that includes some of the world's most recognizable brands: Samsung, Apple, and Google. Read More
The unlocked OnePlus 7 Pro variant got Android 10 in September, while T-Mobile units have been stuck with Pie and the September security patch. After having to wait for months, those with a carrier-locked handset are in for a treat, as they've finally started receiving stable Android 10. Apart from all the Android 10 goodies, the update also brings a relatively newer security patch. Read More
The OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro have already received a stable version of Android 10, followed by some minor point releases addressing additional issues. Since there ain't no rest for the wicked and there are always bugs to exterminate, the company is continuing to tweak its software and has just published another Open Beta for the two devices. It's coming with charging and memory management improvements as well as the usual bug fixes. Read More
