The NVIDIA SHIELD is the premier Android TV device currently on the market, but what really sets it apart is the games NVIDIA are able to secure as exclusives on Android (or sometimes just straight-up AAA titles). The next one of these games to come to the SHIELD is Kingdom: New Lands, a kingdom-building game in a cool, cute pixel-art graphical style. Read More
To make way for the new products announced at today's event, Google has removed several items from their online store. Most notable is the removal of the Nexus 5X and 6P, Google's smartphone lineup from last year, now replaced by the Pixel devices. Also gone from the virtual shelves is the NVIDIA Shield console, still arguably the best Android TV device on the market. The Mattel View-Master VR Starter Pack and Goggle Tech C1-Glass VR Viewer are both removed as well, now that Daydream is the focus of Google's VR efforts. Finally, the Dell Chromebook 13 is gone. If you're our lucky winner, you'll receive one (1) NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV console, four (4) official NVIDIA SHIELD gamepads, and one (1) free code for Borderlands 2 for SHIELD. Read More
The NVIDIA SHIELD is probably the best Android TV hardware out there (it has Borderlands!), and today it's getting even better, with the addition of Plex DVR to the latest Plex Media Server beta, which enables the recording of any over-the-air TV channels through any web browser.
Plex Media Server released on SHIELD earlier this year, so Plex DVR is just the latest feature to come to the service. This apparently makes the SHIELD the only streaming set-top box with DVR functionalities, which only makes it more attractive as an Android TV box. To use Plex Media Server, a Plex Pass is needed, however, which may dampen things somewhat for a number of potential users. Read More
There are a lot of PC and console games that have made their way to NVIDIA's SHIELD set-top box, but I believe that Pavilion is the first to get an exclusive launch on the platform before making its way elsewhere. The 2D puzzle-adventure game from Visiontrick, which mixes elements of old point-and-click adventure games with more modern fare like Monument Valley, is now on the Play Store for ten bucks. It'll make its way to the PS4, Vita, Steam, and Humble stores later this month. Read More
There's a new paradigm in strategy games. Whereas the old guard in real-time titles like Starcraft, Age of Empires, and Command & Conquer tended to get more complex with each release, the point of Auralux and its imitators is to boil strategy down to its purest components. It does so by making offense, defense, and resource gathering all more or less the same game mechanic, in the tradition of Galactic Conquest (AKA Galcon). Now the sequel to Auralux is out, and it's looking pretty great. Read More
Vector Unit has cultivated a reputation as one of the most consistently solid developers on Android, so a new release from them is always a good thing. But when it's a new entry in the Riptide GP series, then it's time to call the boss and tell him you're (cough, cough) "sick." Riptide GP: Renegade is the third installment, and SHIELD Android TV owners can play it right now, only a few days after the PC and console release. Read More
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is probably the most technically challenging game on the SHIELD TV right now, and by extension, on Android as a whole. It's also the third entry in the popular shooter-looter series... but in terms of critical and fan appeal, it's a notable step below the game that preceeded it. Well there's good news today, Borderlands fans: Borderlands 2 is finally available on the SHIELD Android TV (though it's not showing compatible with the SHIELD Tablet at the moment). It's $15 on the Play Store with no in-app purchases. Read More
As part of Prime Day, NVIDIA is offering the Shield and Shield Pro on Amazon for $50 off their respective MSRPs, in addition to throwing in a free second gamepad (Shield's gamepad is, by the way, excellent). Normally, the cost of a Shield 16GB console with two gamepads would be $259 - today it's just $149. The 500GB Shield Pro with a second controller would normally be $359, but for Prime Day, it's $249. That's a heck of a deal, and while Shield promotions aren't exactly rare, they're usually either a flat discount or a free remote - this deal hasn't happened before, and offers the greatest net discount on the console and its accessories we've seen yet. NVIDIA's latest update for Shield - the only Android TV device worth buying, frankly - is out, and it adds a whole bunch of stuff. Like Plex Media Server. Which goes quite well with today's giveaway of a 500GB Shield Pro. With Plex Media Server on your Shield, you'll not only be able to watch all your Plex content, you'll be able to store it on the Shield itself.
Shield is powerful enough to transcode all your videos and serve them up on your network, eliminating the need for a standalone Plex box on your network. Shield just does it all. Read More
