Motorola Mobility CEO: No Tablets Until "Early Next Year" At Best; We're All "Oh, Really?"

During the Deutsche Bank Technology Conference yesterday, Motorola Mobility CEO Sanjay Jha said, “I will only develop a tablet if it is sufficiently compelling. Hopefully, that is early next year.” In fact, according to his comments, it seems that they haven't even started development of a tablet yet.

This doesn't quite jibe with what we've heard before. In mid-August, word around the 'net was that a Motorola tablet device was coming to Verizon sometime in November.

Verizon Page Teases Froyo Update for DROID X - Really, It's Coming. When? Good Question

With a leaked 2.2 build for the DROID X already floating around, Froyo for the DROID X is not a matter of if, but when. Unfortunately, "when" is best answered as "soon." This was the speculation after the leak, but soon has not come nearly soon enough. Given Motorola's very stern warning regarding copyright infringement on the leaked version, the delay is probably owed to Moto patching up the exploits that have allowed the DROID X to be rooted and its bootloader security to be circumvented (à la Birdman and Koush).

Motorola CLIQ, CLIQ XT, And Backflip Now To Receive 2.1 Upgrade In Early Q4; Those Who Still Care Are Not Amused

Motorola has, once again, updated its timeline for device upgrades and has changed the expected Android 2.1 update time for the CLIQ, CLIQ XT, and the Backflip to be late Q3 to early Q4 of this year.

This is supposedly good news, but haven't CLIQ/CLIQ XT/Backflip users already waited long enough? Motorola seems to be throwing salt in customers' wounds by pushing this upgrade back. Not only do the owners of these devices now have to wait longer for an update, but the update they are waiting for has already become antiquated.

14 Motorola Droid 2 R2-D2 Static Wallpapers Leak Out

Hot on the heels of yesterday's live wallpaper leak for the Droid 2 R2-D2 edition, today MyDroidWorld continued the system dump disassembly by releasing 14 static JPG wallpapers that will make any Star Wars fan feel nostalgic (and some maybe teary-eyed).

Non-Star-Wars-fans will find these boring, weird, and psychedelic at times - although, what are you doing with the R2-D2 edition anyway?

You can download these wallpapers as a single zip archive from our mirror: AndroidPolice mirror or hit up individual ones below (right click > Save Link As...).

Motorola Charm Review: The Pixel-Faced Killah

P9060174_1 P9060178_1 P9060204

Getting my hands on the Charm was no mean feat. Motorola didn’t seem keen to send out review units to anyone in a hurry, so I took it upon myself to go buy one, under the pretext of it being a gift for my girlfriend (she has a Nokia 1661 for chrissakes).

That in itself was quite a quest, as not a single store in the state of Maine seemed to have one in stock.

Motorola Droid 2 R2-D2 Special Edition Live Wallpapers Leaked, Available For Download

The R2D2 is coming later this month, but in the meantime P3Droid from MyDroidWorld ripped apart the system dump and weeded out the special edition Star Wars themed live wallpapers. He was also kind enough to shoot a few handy videos demonstrating them, and I must say, they're pretty cool and will definitely be appreciated by any Star Wars fan. Kudos, P3.

Update: The static wallpapers have now been leaked as well.

First Custom ROM For Motorola Droid 2 Lands: Epic Unleashed 1.0

Good news on the Droid 2 modding front: the first custom ROM for said phone has been released. As this is the first ROM out for the device - and it's fairly soon after release - there's not a ton of customization. Still, any improvement is better than none at all, right?

The ROM (Epic Unleashed 1.0) is the work of Matt4542, and requires root and koush's recovery. It retains a feel pretty close to stock:

Things in the rom:
Removed bloatware(Stupid Verizon!)
Added scripts
Many build.prop mods

Still has Motoblur, just took my system folder and edited it like ****.

Motorola Droid 2 Return Rate And Dropped Call Rate Are Both Low

Looks like the Motorola did a pretty solid job of improving on the Droid: BGR's heard word that the Droid 2 has a great return rate; in fact, it's "the lowest smartphone return rate on Verizon Wireless." Better still, it has a very low dropped call rate. Way to go, Moto - stick it to the man in your ads and products alike.

Irony: Adobe May Be Killing Flash On Motorola Droid/Milestone

We've pinged our contact at Adobe for clarification, but this could be some fantastic irony: Adobe has raised the minimum requirements for Flash. Specifically, the minimum CPU requirement for mobile devices with WVGA resolutions has been bumped up to a Cortex A8 running at 800 MHz. With its 550 MHz CPU, the Droid/Milestone no longer meets the minimum.

We're not sure yet if this is retroactive - in other words, will the Droid receive an update that removes Flash support?

No Flash On The iPhone? Motorola Has A Droid 2 Ad For That

Fun and advertising rarely come together...unless, of course, Motorola and Verizon's Droid ad campaign is involved. First it was iDon't, then it was DroidDoes, and now it's a series of newspaper ads, the first of which poked fun at the iPhone 4's external antenna and the latest of which takes a jab at Apple's war on Flash.

As the above newspaper ad shows, it turns out more people than just us Android nerds care about Adobe Flash (or at least, that's what Motorola would like us to believe).
