An Open Letter To Motorola: Start Promising A Concrete Period Of Update Support To Your Customers Or Start Losing Them

Last week, Motorola announced its plans in regard to devices it would be upgrading to Android Marshmallow. Missing from that list were the 2013 Moto X, the 2014 Moto X on AT&T and Verizon, and both the 2014 and 2015 Moto E. Users were understandably upset by the latter two models, which in the case of the Moto E 2015 resulted in a phone that had barely 7 months of software support - despite Motorola marketing it on the promise of not leaving customers "behind."

This is unacceptable. The Moto X 2014 on AT&T and Verizon perhaps even more so given those phones have barely been available a year now and are already seeing software support dropped - and Motorola's got 20 pages of complaints supporting that view.

The new Moto X is set to come out in a week or two, but the 2014 model is still a fine device. It's even more fine if you can get one for a mere $180, as you can today on eBay. This is the Verizon model of the phone (XT1096), but that means it's unlocked and should work fine on GSM carriers.

Google and the various major Android device vendors and carriers are scrambling to patch the recently-discovered Stagefright exploit, a weakness in Android's multimedia processing that can allow remote access via a simple MMS message. Google has already begun patching Nexus devices, and Samsung is working its way through its extensive product range starting with flagships. Yesterday Motorola released its plans to update its phones.

  • Moto X Style (patched from launch)
  • Moto X Play (patched from launch)
  • Moto X (1st Gen, 2nd Gen)
  • Moto X Pro
  • Moto Maxx/Turbo
  • Moto G (1st Gen, 2nd Gen, 3rd Gen)
  • Moto G with 4G LTE (1st Gen, 2nd Gen)
  • Moto E (1st Gen, 2nd Gen)
  • Moto E with 4G LTE (2nd Gen)

Some third-gen Moto G phones (released late last month) have been patched from launch, but others will need an over-the-air update.

Verizon Officially Announces The Second-Gen Moto X Android 5.1 OTA Update

It's only been a few days since we heard of the soak test, but it looks like it's been successful enough for Motorola and Verizon to fast track the latest Moto X 2014 update. Verizon announced the Android 5.1 over-the-air update in its usual way, so at least some users should see the update alert by the end of the day. The rest of you will be waiting for up to a week or more, unless you manage to track down the OTA ZIP file from a user forum.

moto x update

According to the update information, there isn't much on top of Android 5.1 that's notable - not surprising, since Motorola's software builds tend to add only a few features on top of stock AOSP and Google functions.
