[WTF] Motorola Marketed The Moto E 2015 On Promise Of Updates, Is Now Apparently Ending Them After 219 Days

Today, Motorola published a list of the devices it would be updating to Android Marshmallow. And to be clear: that list is of planned updates. All of them. If a device is not on that list, Motorola is not planning on upgrading it to Marshmallow at this time, and that means those plans are unlikely to change. We even have explicit confirmation that Moto X 2014 AT&T and Verizon models, which do not appear on this list, will not be getting Android 6.0.

Huawei Mate 2 And Moto E 2015 CyanogenMod Nightly Builds Are Now Available For Download

Huawei Mate 2 And Moto E 2015 CyanogenMod Nightly Builds Are Now Available For Download

The CyanogenMod team continues to develop builds for new phones, and today we get support for two budget-oriented options that are popular with the unlocked crowd. The Moto E 2015, a phone with a relatively small screen and a tiny price, and the Huawei Mate 2, a phone with a relatively enormous screen and a price that's still pretty small, both have CyanogenMod 12.1 (Android 5.1) ROMs waiting for them on the official download site.

The Mate 2 is under the "mt2" codename, currently with three nightly builds available, and the Moto E 2015 is (for no obvious reason) labeled "otus" with two builds available at the time of writing.

Motorola Details Plans To Patch The Stagefright Vulnerability For 2013 Phones And Later

Motorola Details Plans To Patch The Stagefright Vulnerability For 2013 Phones And Later

Google and the various major Android device vendors and carriers are scrambling to patch the recently-discovered Stagefright exploit, a weakness in Android's multimedia processing that can allow remote access via a simple MMS message. Google has already begun patching Nexus devices, and Samsung is working its way through its extensive product range starting with flagships. Yesterday Motorola released its plans to update its phones.

So which devices will get the fix? Basically everything Motorola has made since 2013, including carrier variants and DROID models for Verizon in the US. Here's the full list:

  • Moto X Style (patched from launch)
  • Moto X Play (patched from launch)
  • Moto X (1st Gen, 2nd Gen)
  • Moto X Pro
  • Moto Maxx/Turbo
  • Moto G (1st Gen, 2nd Gen, 3rd Gen)
  • Moto G with 4G LTE (1st Gen, 2nd Gen)
  • Moto E (1st Gen, 2nd Gen)
  • Moto E with 4G LTE (2nd Gen)
  • DROID Turbo
  • DROID Ultra/Mini/Maxx

Some third-gen Moto G phones (released late last month) have been patched from launch, but others will need an over-the-air update.

[Deal Alert] 2nd Gen Moto E 3G And LTE Models Currently Just $90-$100 On Amazon ($30-$50 Off)

[Deal Alert] 2nd Gen Moto E 3G And LTE Models Currently Just $90-$100 On Amazon ($30-$50 Off)

The 2nd Moto E is Motorola's cheap phone, but it's really not that bad for less demanding use. Normally it goes for $120 - $150 depending on whether you want LTE. Today Amazon is apparently selling them for significantly less. Global and US GSM models are going for just $90. LTE models are selling for only $10 more.

You get a 4.5-inch qHD display, a 5MP camera, and a 2390mAh battery. 3G models get a Snapdragon 200 processor, while the LTE option comes with the 410 instead. Either way, you have your choice of black or white.

These units are GSM-only, so don't pick one up if you're looking to use your Moto E on Verizon or Sprint.

Motorola Beginning Android 5.1 Soak Test For AT&T GoPhone Moto E LTE (2nd Gen) Beginning Now

Motorola Beginning Android 5.1 Soak Test For AT&T GoPhone Moto E LTE (2nd Gen) Beginning Now

On Google+ today, Motorola's David Schuster announced that the AT&T version of the 2nd generation Moto E would be receiving its Android 5.1 soak test today, meaning a general OTA shouldn't be far away.

what

Global versions of the Moto E 2nd Gen have generally already received this update, so if you want a changelog, it's right here. Android 5.1 brings new notification and interrupt settings, an enhanced quick settings panel, Android's Device Protection feature (with factory reset protection), and more. Of course, this will also bring a litany of bug fixes (and probably new bugs!) specific to Moto E owners.

Verizon's Prepaid Version Of The Moto E (Second Generation) Updated To Android 5.1

Verizon's Prepaid Version Of The Moto E (Second Generation) Updated To Android 5.1

Hey Verizon, you do know that your flagship and completely exclusive DROID Turbo is still running on Android 4.4, right? Right? That being the case, does it seem a little odd that the cheapest of the Moto line, the Moto E, which is only sold to pre-paid Verizon customers, now runs the latest version of Android? No? Well OK, then. If you have the second-gen version of the Moto E, expect an update sometime in the next few days. If you have a DROID Turbo, buy a Moto E.

Verizon's notes on Lollipop 5.1 don't mention anything out of the ordinary for the update, which shouldn't surprise you, since Motorola's cheaper phones run a version of Android that's almost completely stock.

The Second Generation Moto E Is Getting Its Lollipop 5.1 OTA Update Now

The Second Generation Moto E Is Getting Its Lollipop 5.1 OTA Update Now

Just about a week after Motorola released update notes for the second version of its Moto E budget handset, it looks like the Lollipop 5.1 update is indeed hitting the airwaves. Multiple posters on XDA have alerted their fellow users that the update (version XT1527, if you're wondering) has reached their phones. Thanks to the Moto E's off-contract nature, it should hit users on all carriers at the same time.

According to screenshots posted on the forum, the update is a bit over 250MB in size, which is practically tiny for over-the-air updates these days. (You can thank Motorola's "I Can't Believe It's Not Nexus" software approach - Samsung updates are pushing a gigabyte or more.)
