LG's got one last hurrah for the V60 with an Android 13 update

The ghost of LG past still haunts us

Back when it was in business, LG's mobile division was one of the top dogs, making some of the best Android phones out there. The writing was on the wall, but we were disheartened to see the company fold soon after unveiling the rollable prototype at CES 2021. New hardware may be gone, but old LG phones are still receiving software updates. This week, the LG V60 ThinQ is receiving its final Android OS update.

AT&T becomes latest carrier to bring Android 11 to the LG V60

New security patches are along for the ride, though which you'll get varies

LG has never had the best reputation for software updates, and that situation really hasn't changed any with the release of Android 11 last year. It took until 2021 before we saw Android 11 updates hit any of the company's phones, and even that had been limited to South Korea. Now we're finally starting to see some domestic action, as the V60 on Verizon and T-Mobile upgrades to Android 11.

For several years now, unlocking LG phones has required the use of the company's official unlock tool. Not all of LG's devices are supported, but now three more phones have been added to the roster. Get your custom ROMs ready.

Verizon LG V60 sale offers the cheapest Snapdragon 865 phone you can get

At least $400 off, could be good as free...

It costs much to own a smartphone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 inside — some would say too much — and it doesn't look as if prices will tide off soon. But if you're hungry for a spec upgrade and are willing to jump hoops for it, you can get an LG V60 with complimentary Dual Screen case for $550 if you start a new line on Verizon and as low as free if you trade in a phone.

LG V60 ThinQ Dual Screen review: Low-key flagship with a smart price

Power, performance, and even a secondary display could have you wondering why anyone would pay over a grand for a phone

LG's got a new design language in the works — a fresh take on its phones that's supposed to usher the company into this decade with a clean look and some updated thinking towards flagship hardware. But before we turn the page to that next chapter, we've still got its first big 2020 launch to check out, the 5G-equipped, Dual Screen, 865-packing LG V60 ThinQ.Granted, that's still a pretty steep bill, but compared to a $1,200 Galaxy S20+ or $1,400 S20 Ultra, the V60 stands out with its "mere" three-digit sticker price. We've seen what OnePlus has been able to do and slide in under that thousand-dollar mark — what about LG? Did LG make any serious sacrifices to give us a $900 phone, or is this one of the better flagship deals around? Let's take a look:

OnePlus 8 phones join the club supporting 3D objects and animals in Google Search

4 other devices are in the mix with this update

There are a lot of fun 3D objects like skeletons, cars, planets, and animals you can view in Google Search, which might be perfect to pass the time while you and your kids are stuck at home. The underlying technology enabling this is called Google Play Services for AR, formerly known as ARCore. It's an engine that powers most games and applications on Android that use augmented reality effects. However, since the framework has to be tuned for each device, Google has to periodically update Play Services to support new phones and tablets. Since the last time we covered the library, 42 more devices have been added to the roster.

LG V60 supports active pens and so does its Dual Screen display

Two big screens deserve a strong stylus

Not all phones with a stylus are created equal: Samsung's Galaxy Note series support active pens; the recently-launched Moto G Stylus does not. A part of that function is due to their price gap, but you wouldn't think that phones that don't come with complimentary styluses would also have digitized displays. Well, the LG V60 comes with not one, but two small surprises in that aspect.

LG's latest stab at making dual-screen smartphones a thing is the V60 ThinQ 5G, and you'll be able to pick on up starting this week. Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile have all announced preliminary launch details. T-Mobile and AT&T will be first out of the gate with Verizon bringing up the rear next week.

LG releases kernel source code for V60 ThinQ

LG has published the kernel source for its latest smartphone, the V60 ThinQ. The code is available for two variants of the device: LMV600N and LMV600NO. The phone was released with LG's skinned version of Android 10.

LG unveils the V60 ThinQ 5G with dual screens, 5000mAh battery, and a 64MP camera

Another dual-screen phone in an increasingly folding-screen world

For the past few years, LG has introduced its mainstream G-series flagship in late winter or early spring, followed by a larger, more creator-focused V-series phone a few months later. We saw that routine begin to get shaken up last fall with the launch of the G8X (complete with its Dual Screen accessory hoping to steal a little thunder from the folding-phone craze), and now that shift continues not with the introduction of a presumptive G9, but instead with an early new entry to the V series, the LG V60 ThinQ 5G.

Traditionally, LG's spring release cycle has been based around the G-series phones. However, signs increasingly point to LG moving the V-series to the spring slot. A new leak from Evan "evleaks" Blass shows the unannounced V60 ThinQ as a translucent render. LG appears to be packing in the cameras and battery capacity this time.

A month ahead of the event, LG has just pushed out a teaser video, telling folks to "save the date" on Friday, September 6th during IFA. In the video, LG shows off what looks like a folding, dual-screen device, though it's probably another dual-screen case for an upcoming phone, similar to the one made for the V50 ThinQ 5G. Given the timing and the dual-screen connection, LG is probably going to show off the V60 (ThinQ?) at IFA.
