Unlocked LG G8 falls to $400 ($450 off) on Amazon

The flagship smartphone competition is always fierce, and LG's phones haven't exactly been among the best lately. It was virtually impossible to recommend the G8 at its $849.99 MSRP, but it's one hell of a phone with the latest and greatest specs for $399.99.

LG G8X ThinQ with Dual Screen review: A different way to fold, with trade-offs all its own

Every smartphone manufacturer wants to get in on the ground floor of the latest trends, and in 2019 the name of the game is “folding.” After teasing flexible technology at trade shows for years, we're finally seeing the arrival of big-screen phones that bend down the middle for easy storage. But other companies are turning to more old-school tech to accomplish a similar feat, like LG and its dual-screen hardware. After getting started with the V50, LG's back with its follow-up: the G8X with Dual Screen case.

(Update: LG G8X) ARCore renamed to Google Play Services for AR, adds support for Pixel 4 and more devices

Google is always hard at work on adding ARCore support to new devices. This time around, those include the brand-new Note10 and 10+, but other than that, a bigger shift has occurred on the company's AR front – that is, if you count marketing and naming schemes as big shifts. The catchy ARCore Play Store listing makes way for the cumbersome phrase "Google Play Service for AR." The change has already been visible for a while, but the company only introduced the new name in the app's changelog last week, along with announcing support for 60fps rendering on capable devices.

LG sues TCL over LTE patent infringement

LG's smartphone division is known for quirky, gimmicky devices that often don't quite live up to expectations, but the company still does have extensive patents concerning LTE and 4G communication software. The Korean conglomerate aims to protect these assets and has thus decided to file a lawsuit against TCL in Germany, alleging it's infringing three of its patents.

The LG V20, the company's last flagship with a removable battery, is three years old now, but the Korean manufacturer hasn't forgotten about it. Small victories: LG lost a lot less money on smartphones last quarter

LG hasn't made money selling smartphones for years at this point, but bless 'em, they just keep trying. LG just released results for the third quarter of 2019, and it saw another loss from the mobile business as expected. However, LG says it lost a lot less money on smartphones than it did last quarter.

LG's Dual Screen hardware finally getting a game with exclusive second-screen functionality

Enhanced gaming has been one of the most consistently promoted features of LG phones that support its Dual Screen hardware. Until now, the only gaming-centric improvement available for these devices has been the ability to use the second display as a dedicated gamepad. Now we're finally seeing games introduce some bespoke functionality for that second panel, with the release of a dual-screen edition of Pirates of the Caribbean: Tides of War.

[Update: AT&T, too] Android 9 Pie makes its way to the LG G6 on Verizon and in Europe

If there's one aspect of Android that could use improvement, it's the software updates. As OEMs and carriers set their sights on rolling out Android 10, there are still plenty of older devices haven't even tasted a slice of Android 9 Pie. That's why this week's scheduled release of Pie for Verizon and European Union users rocking the LG G6 from 2017 is something of a minor miracle. That LG Software Upgrade Center is finally coming through!

LG G8X up for pre-orders from October 25 for as low as $300, but with an asterisk

If LG seems particularly out of sorts this year, you could probably tack a lot of that to its contorted phone release schedule: it announced the V50 alongside the G8, released the G8 in April and then the V50 (with its 5G-ness) in June, then decided to fill its IFA booth in September with a dual-screen remix of the G8, the G8X. Today, we're learning when that phone will go on sale in the United States.
