[Deal Alert] eBay has the international LG G5 for $400 ($200+ off retail price)

Okay, so the G5's modular design hasn't set the world on fire in quite the manner that LG probably hoped it would. But aside from some of the foibles of its unique form factor, it's still a high-end flagship device with some of the latest specs and a great camera. And if you chop the original retail price down, it turns into a pretty good deal. Such is the case with this eBay listing, which is selling the international model of the G5 for just $399.99.

LG G5 gets very limited 7.0 Nougat preview

Before today, only Google devices, the Sony Xperia Z3, and the Sony Xperia X Performance had Android 7.0 previews built for them. Now, another Android has joined the Nougat ranks—the LG G5. Whether you like the G5 or not (David sure didn't), it's getting a Nougat preview right now, albeit with more than a few catches.

As Samsung announces big profits, LG's mobile unit loses $132 million in Q2 due to slow G5 sales

LG's mobile business has regularly been on the knife's edge of profitability over the years, and after last year's lackluster G4, the company likely hoped the more adventurous G5 would help pay the smartphone arm's bills and, perhaps, even deliver a profit to the unit. Unfortunately, according to LG's Q2 2016 fiscal results released today, that effort has not paid off.

LG Mobile reported an operating loss of $132 million for the second quarter, the first full fiscal quarter the G5 was on sale in major markets (it launched April 1st here in the US). This is especially dismal given that it marks only a very modest improvement over LG's Q1 results for its mobile unit, which saw losses of around $168 million.

[Deal Alert] B&H is offering the LG G5 with a free Watch Urbane or VR headset for $350 off

Want to know how Android Police feels about the LG G5? Well, we hate it. And we love it.

Okay, so we have mixed feelings. At this point you've made up your own mind about the phone. If you're ready to snag one, now might be the time to do so, especially if you also want an LG Watch Urbane.

LG gives execs the boot and restructures mobile division following disappointing G5 sales

The LG G5 was announced earlier this year with an ecosystem of "friends" that were aimed at boosting profits in its troubled mobile division. After initially solid shipments of the G5, things have turned sour fast. LG has announced a major shakeup in its mobile division that includes firing some staff and the formation of a "program management office" to oversee product development.

LG G5 Friends review, take 2: 360 Cam! 360 Cam! 360 Cam! Oh... other modules too

When I published my review of the LG G5, my personal take on the device itself was positive and divergent from David's more criticizing review. However, there is one aspect both David and I agree on almost to the letter: the Friends. They are, in my opinion, fun to try, but you can tell they were rushed, with a poorly executed mechanism, and some highly doubtful usefulness factor. Well, all but the 360 Cam. That one is pure awesome bundled in magic and wrapped in 360 degrees of cool.

Here's how some of the modules work. The G5's bottom chin can be removed with a small button/latch on the side of the device.

LG G5 review, take 2: Don't judge a very capable book by its unassuming cover

In my surroundings, I am known as the "LG girl." I switched to the brand in 2013 when the G2 was announced and fell in love with the big screen, the great camera, and even LG's own software additions on top of AOSP. I recall showing friends and acquaintances photos I'd taken with the G2 while hiking, flipping the phone to landscape, and telling them to swipe through the pics. "It's like holding only a screen, the bezels disappear," was my own way of explaining why I loved the G2 so much. It never failed to impress.

Then the G3 came along.

[Neat] The LG G5 can use DisplayPort Alternate Mode on USB Type-C LG monitors

Part of the promise of USB Type-C is the ability to connect non-USB signals using the same cable. One such specification is DisplayPort, the kind of cable you use to connect to certain video monitors. It turns out, if you connect an LG G5 to LG's 4K 27UD88-W monitor using the provided USB Type-C to Type-C cable, you can mirror your display.

[Deal Alert] The International LG G5 (With Band 12 Support) Dips Below $500 On eBay

Good things come to those who wait. Nowhere is that adage more true than when shopping around for high-profile, high-margin smartphone hardware. For example, LG's modular G5 flagship can now be had for under $500, at least if you're willing to buy off eBay. A vendor there is selling the international unlocked version (model number H860) for $496 even, almost $200 off of the retail price at most carriers. Black, white, gold, and pink versions are available, and US residents in the lower 48 can swing free shipping too.

[Nice] The LG G5 Supports USB Power Delivery Over USB Type-C In Addition To Qualcomm QC3.0

Remember that debacle over the LG G5 and HTC 10's support for Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 and how it meant that those phones weren't exactly compliant with the USB Type-C spec? Google engineer Benson Leung actually opened our eyes to the issue and explained that by its mere mode of operation, QC 3.0 raises Vbus above the 5V spec limit to 9V and 12V to get faster charging rates.

Well, it looks like LG has done something interesting in its G5. It doesn't just support Quick Charge 3.0, but it also supports the official USB Power Delivery 2.0 protocol. Gtrusted's engineers did the test and showed the analyzer traces in the image above: the G5 can charge with Google's Universal Type-C 60W Charger at 15 Watts (5V @ 3A) and 18 Watts (9V @ 2A).
