Back in October, Huawei began sending out invitations to an Oreo beta for the Mate 9. We're at the end of January now, and the US-compatible Mate 9 is finally receiving its official update to Android 8.0 Oreo. Some international models have had Oreo for some time now, but those of us in America are only just getting it.

One of the most important features included in Android 8.0 Oreo is 'Project Treble,' Google's attempt to modularize Android. We covered it in detail here, but in a nutshell, Treble separates all the low-level device drivers (known as the 'vendor implementation') from the rest of Android. This makes updating phones/tablets to the latest version of Android much easier for manufacturers, as long as they already support Treble.
Android phone buyers have been begging Google for years to do something about the platform's typically slow updates. As of this month, Android 8.0 Oreo only has 0.3% market share among Android devices, Marshmallow (released in 2015) is still at 30%, and Lollipop (from 2014) sits at 27%. Google's latest attempt to solve this problem is 'Project Treble,' a major restructuring of Android that is part of 8.0 Oreo.
Huawei isn't a big name in the flagship phone game stateside. But the Mate 9, the company's first flagship officially sold here, has made a good first impression. Now you can pick one up, along with a Huawei Band 2, for just $399 as part of Amazon's Deal of the Day.The Mate 9 is a powerhouse of a phone. It sports a 5.9" 1080p LCD, the excellent Kirin 960, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage with microSD expansion, a 12MP/20MP Leica-branded camera duo out back, an 8MP selfie-shooter, and a giant 4000mAh battery. This is also the lowest price we've seen it go for, as it's previously sold for the same price without the Band 2 included free of charge. If you're interested, don't wait. Since this is Amazon's Deal of the Day, you've got about twelve hours as of publishing time to pick one up. Prime shipping is free, so the bundle will get to you before you know it. The Mate 9 is yesterday's news, but it's still a pretty good phone. The price is getting hard to argue with, too. After previously dropping to $499, the Mate 9 is now on sale for $399 at various retailers. This is a limited time offer rather than a permanent price drop. So, don't think it over too long.Huawei is on the verge of shipping the Mate 10 in several markets. While there's no US release date yet, it's probably not far off. If you don't need to be on the latest and greatest, the Mate 9 is still a respectable phone, especially at the newly reduced price. It has a Kirin 960 SoC, a 5.9-inch 1080p LCD, 64GB of storage, and a 12/20MP dual camera setup. It runs Android 7.0 right now, but there's an Oreo beta test happening.
The Huawei Mate 9 was a pretty decent phone when it was released in November of last year. It had a clean design with excellent battery life, and the company's EMUI skin was significantly less awful. It shipped with Android 7.0, and now it looks like Huawei is getting ready to release 8.0 Oreo.
If there's one thing our readers love more than phones, it's a phone giveaway. And if there's one thing they like more than that, it's an international phone giveaway. Huawei and Android Police have teamed up to give one lucky reader, from anywhere in the world, a Mate 9. Whatever far-flung destination you have in mind, Huawei's phone is up for the trip. And once it's there, you can even use it to enter into the Huawei Museum photo contest.
The Huawei Mate 9 and Honor 6X are a pair of very good phones. The prices for both of them have usually been around $599 and $249 respectively, but they have occasionally gone on sale for less. Now it looks like both phones are dropping in price permanently.First off is the Huawei Mate 9, which initially had a $599 MSRP but now goes for $499. If you need a refresher, the Mate 9 has a Kirin 960 processor, 4GB of RAM, a 5.9" 1080p touchscreen, and a 4,000mAh battery. The phone ships with a skinned version of Android 7.0, but as far as I can tell (feel free to prove me wrong in the comments), there isn't a 7.1 update yet.The Honor 6X is a less powerful device, but with a much lower price of $199 (it was initially $249). You get a Kirin 655 chipset, a 5.5" 1080p screen, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of expandable storage, and a 3,340mAh battery. A more expensive model with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage is also available, but it's not the $199 version. The phone initially shipped with EMUI 4.1 (Huawei's custom version of Android 7.0), which was pretty terrible. It was later updated to EMUI 5 (based on 7.0), which vastly improved the software experience. I recommend reading Jordan's review of the Honor 6X with Nougat if you plan on buying it.The new price has already showed up almost everywhere the phones are sold. You can buy them from various retailers at the links below.
Huawei and Honor mostly sneak under the radar here in the United States, but they still make some solid Android devices. The Honor 6X already appeared on sale as part of Amazon's Prime Day, but a few other devices from Huawei are discounted too.First up is the Huawei Mate 9, which is $449.99 ($150 off). If you're unfamiliar with it, the Mate 9 has a Kirin 960 CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 5.9" 1080p screen, and a 4,000mAh battery. We reviewed the phone back in January, and while Huawei's EMUI skin left a bit to be desired, the phone has a solid battery life with a clean design. It shipped with Android 7.0, but as far as I can tell, there isn't a 7.1 update yet.Two of Huawei's wearables are also on sale - the Huawei FIT and Huawei Watch 2. The former is $69.99 ($60 off), and the latter starts at $209.99 ($90-110 off, depending on the model). I'm not really sure if the Watch 2 is worth it even at the lower price, but I'll leave you to our review and let you decide. The better-looking Watch 2 Classic is also discounted, so that might be a better option.Let us know in the comments if you pick any of these up. Or you can talk about how your day is going, that's cool too.
Huawei may not be a big player here in the United States, but it's slowly easing itself in. The Mate 9 is the first flagship device that the Chinese OEM is officially selling here under the Huawei moniker, and it's not a bad introduction. In our Mate 9 review, we found that the Mate 9 was a solid device, and its MSRP of $599.99 was reasonable. At just $379.99 for a refurbished unit, this phablet is a downright steal.
Huawei used to avoid releasing high-end phones in the US, but no more. The Mate 9 was launched in the US several months ago, and it was announced as the very first phone to have Amazon's Alexa built in. However, that wasn't ready at launch, and Huawei didn't even know exactly when it would be available. Alexa finally rolled out to the Mate 9 several weeks ago, but Google sort of cut Amazon off at the knees by launching Assistant on the Mate 9 and many other phones while we were waiting for this update.
The Huawei Mate 9 was announced as the first non-Amazon device to have Amazon Alexa back at CES. However, it wasn't included when the phone shipped in the US. Huawei only said the feature would be delivered in a later update. Well, now it's later. The Alexa update has started rolling out in the US.
JerryRigEverything is back with another one of his signature snuff films phone abuse videos. This time he's taking his graded MOH picks to the Mate 9, Huawei's latest premium offering. The big, bold device has been generally well-received thanks to typically solid hardware and much-improved software; shipping with Nougat was a nice touch. The JerryRigEverything YouTube channel doesn't really care about that - it's all about how much physical abuse the phone can take.
Huawei has become one of the largest phone makers on the planet, and it's done so without too much help from the US market. The company has dabbled mostly with mid-range phones here, including some from the Honor sub-brand. The Mate 9 is the first phone Huawei has brought to the US that isn't explicitly going after the budget crowd. It's running the latest version of Huawei's in-house Kirin SoC, has an all metal housing, and the Leica-branded cameras are present too.The hardware side hasn't been Huawei's problem in western markets. It's the software. I've always had trouble using Huawei phones for very long because of the many, many annoyances present in the EMUI Android skin. I was intrigued when Huawei announced the Mate 9 would ship with Nougat and a new version of EMUI. The software turns out to be a big step forward for Huawei. The Mate 9 isn't only "good for the price" or "good for Huawei," it's actually just good.
The Huawei Mate 9 was announced in November and set to launch in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, with no sign of US availability. Now at CES, the company has announced that it's bringing the giant phone across the Atlantic (or Pacific, depending on which way you're traveling) and making it available for purchase immediately. The Mate 9 is a large phone with a 5.9" 1080p IPS LCD and a massive 4000mAh battery that should easily last 2 days and charge quickly with "SuperCharge technology." It packs Huawei's new Kirin 960 processor, with ARM Cortex-A73/A53 Octa-core CPU and Mali G71 GPU, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and Huawei's now signature collaboration with Leica in the camera department: on the back, the Mate 9 has a dual-lens camera with a 12MP RGB sensor and a 20MP monochrome sensor. The Mate 9 runs Android 7.0 Nougat with Huawei's updated EMUI 5.0 interface on top, but the one significant change from the international model of the phone is that the US variant will have Amazon Alexa integration. That will be available through a pre-installed app on the Mate 9, allowing users to ask questions, set alarms, manage their to-do and shopping lists, check the traffic, control smart home appliances, play music, and more. The Mate 9 is already available to order on Amazon, Best Buy, Newegg, and B&H in both Space Gray and Moonlight Silver colors. The price is $599.99 for the unlocked device with US warranty, but beware it's only compatible with GSM carriers so it'll work on AT&T and T-Mobile. Sprint and Verizon customers need not apply.[EMBED_YT]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__Cj-d3ap50[/EMBED_YT][EMBED_YT]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dX0BR_r8Es0[/EMBED_YT]
The Huawei Mate 9 was the first phone from the Chinese behemoth to come with Android Nougat — in the form of EMUI 5. Now it has announced which of its other phones will be updated to the latest version of Android and EMUI. This will come in the first quarter of 2017.
Huawei has unveiled its latest smartphone, the Mate 9. It's big. How big, you ask? It has a 5.9-inch display, and it's got some big specs to go with it. This is the first phone with Huawei's latest Kirin ARM chip, a revamped version of the EMUI Android skin, and there's a Porche-designed special edition. The price is pretty big for Huawei too at €699 ($776). You might have the option to buy it in the US at some point as well.
Chinese products don't have a great reputation for unique design, whether it be with cars, designer items, or electronics. With this leaked picture (courtesy of VentureBeat, the home of serial leaker @evleaks) of two upcoming Mate 9 models, "Manhattan" and "Long Island," Huawei isn't exactly doing that rep any favors.
