Huawei Watch 2

Huawei Watch 2 first impressions: Uh...

The Huawei Watch, released in 2015, was arguably the best Android Wear device on balance until very recently. Accordingly, its sequel has been much-awaited by fans hoping that the device would be modernized with new features like NFC and Android Wear 2.0 while maintaining the simple elegance that made it such an aesthetically versatile smart timepiece. In fact, I think most Huawei watch fans would actually just be OK with using the same watch body from 2015, albeit with a newer chipset and Android Pay support, and maybe some new finish options or additional buttons.

Huawei announces the sportier, chunkier Watch 2 with GPS, Android Pay, and an LTE option

After the new P10 and P10 Plus, Huawei used its time on stage at Mobile World Congress to unveil the follow-up to its Huawei Watch. And just like we suspected from the previous leaks, this new watch is... nothing like the first. It's chunkier, sportier, blacker, and has a busier look and feel.

Huawei CEO Richard Yu confirms the Huawei Watch 2 will be announced at MWC

The Huawei Watch was many people's favorite Android Wear smartwatch back when it was released in 2015, and it remains so because of its round screen and 'classic' watch look. Huawei CEO Richard Yu has now confirmed on Weibo that the Huawei Watch 2 will be unveiled at MWC, following earlier speculation that this would be the case.

Yu doesn't say anything about the Watch 2, but shares a promotional picture, featuring a man in sports attire wearing the watch. Could this indicate the new model is aimed at the sports watch market? This would mark quite a change from its predecessor, although it's what VentureBeat reported on last month.

Huawei Watch 2 rumored for February debut, will add cellular connectivity

The original Huawei Watch was released nearly two years ago, and received mostly great reviews (including from us). While being a bit large and fairly expensive, it's still one of the best Android Wear watches you can buy, and even can run the Android Wear 2.0 Developer Previews. The watch was removed from the Google Store last month, but it looks like a new model is on the horizon.
