HTC posts Android 7.0 kernel source code for the One A9, plus more models of the HTC 10

HTC published Android 7.0 Nougat kernel source code for the HTC 10 at the tail end of last year. It was only available for the unlocked version at the time, but now the company has updated the page with the code for the T-Mobile, Telstra, and Verizon versions of the phone, too. Furthermore, the HTC One A9 has had its code published for the first time, with a great deal more variants available.

[Deal Alert] Get an HTC U Ultra for $499 ($200 off), an HTC 10 for $399 ($100 off), and more as part of HTC's summer sale

One of the biggest criticisms about HTC smartphones as of late has been about their prices. For instance, $749 is kind of a lot for a U Ultra when you can get a Galaxy S8 for less. But with HTC's Summer Sunset Sale, you can chop a couple hundred bucks off the MSRPs of the U Ultra, the 10, the Under Armour HealthBox, and more.

HTC uploads its SMS app to the Play Store

It's pretty common for manufacturers to upload system applications to the Play Store, so they can be updated outside of Android updates. Samsung has done this several times recently, such as with its Device Maintenance tool and Secure Folder app. Now HTC has uploaded its custom SMS client, aptly named 'HTC Messages,' to the Play Store.

[Update: HTC is working on a fix] HTC's TouchPal Keyboard has started to show ads to users

There are a few places where advertising is acceptable. Your phone's keyboard is definitely not one of them. The TouchPal keyboard, which HTC ships as the default system keyboard on many of its phones, has been updated to display ads.

[Update: HTC Alexa app released for the U11, enables hands free or Edge Sense activation] HTC U11 Edge Sense now updated to include Alexa integration, but it's not working yet

The HTC U11 is a pretty good phone, but it has one particularly divisive feature: Edge Sense. Squeezing the frame of the device can activate various software features, most notably a personal assistant (a feature the next generation Pixel XL is apparently set to borrow). When it was announced by HTC, the U11 was supposed to have a choice of three assistants, including the company's own HTC Companion, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa. The last of those didn't make it in time for launch, but it appears to be included in the latest update to Edge Sense.

HTC announces Solar Red U11, sale on multiple phones starts at midnight EST

HTC's latest flagship, the U11, isn't really a bad phone. It has some issues, notably light bleed on the display and no headphone jack, but it's a much better phone than the U Ultra. If you've been wanting to buy one, HTC is about to start selling a new 'Solar Red' color, plus the company is discounting several other phones and accessories.

HTC U11 review: A pretty good phone, if anyone's still listening

If you're reading Android Police, the HTC U11 is probably not a phone you're going to buy. I say this not because the U11 is bad (it's not - it's good), but because it's statistically likely: last year's HTC flagship, the 10, makes up around 0.38% of Android Police's mobile device traffic year to date, sitting in position number 37 on our most-popular devices list, right below the T-Mobile Galaxy Note 5 (yes, really). While the 10 was a marked improvement over the rather not-so-great One M9, there's no denying that even among phone enthusiasts HTC has rapidly seen its market and mind share decline.

The HTC U11's first software update is here

The U11 is HTC's second flagship phone for 2017, with the standout feature being squeezable 'Edge Sense' sides. It just started shipping to customers in the United States and Canada, but new owners will likely find an update waiting for them out of the box.
