Pixel Slate pre-orders are now open, ahead of late November availability

The Pixel Slate, Google's new Chrome OS tablet, was revealed at the company's October hardware event, but never got a solid launch date. We watched with bated breath as it passed through the FCC last week, hoping that meant we'd see the new device soon — and it seems that our hope wasn't misplaced. The device is now available for pre-order at Best Buy and the Google Store in the US, with both listings revealing a late November release.

Pixel Slate pops up at the FCC as we (maybe not so) patiently wait for sales to open

For as exciting as product announcements can be, especially when we're getting hands-on time with some brand-new gear, they also have the potential to be incredibly frustrating. At Google's October event, we got to meet devices like the new Pixel 3 and 3XL, as well as the Home Hub smart display — and it wasn't too long after their introduction that shoppers could take that hardware home. Sadly, the situation's a bit different for the Pixel Slate, and while Google went official with its Chrome OS tablet last month, it held back on talking about sales in terms any more temporally precise than "later this year." As we wait for the Slate to land, we just passed a major waypost on the path to retail sales, with the tablet showing off its certification docs at the FCC.

Pixel Slate impressions: Android tablets are dead, long live Chromebooks

At today's Made by Google event, we finally got a look at the much-leaked Pixel Slate. It's Google's first attempt at bringing Chrome OS to a "tablet first" form-factor. The Pixel Slate is a decidedly premium effort, with a high resolution "Molecular Display," 8th gen Intel CPUs, and stylish metal design — paired with an appropriate $600-$1600 price tag. It might be on the expensive side, but since Google is transitioning its own tablet efforts to Chrome OS, I think it's safe to say the end of Android tablets is nigh.

Brydge's G-Type keyboard will make the Pixel Slate more of a conventional laptop

Alongside the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, the Pixel Slate was announced today. It's a big, expensive, 12-inch tablet with an optional first-party keyboard cover that turns it into a sort of half-measure laptop. For those seeking a more traditional computing experience (but not enough so to buy a traditional computer), Brydge has a product that may interest you: the G-Type keyboard.

What to expect from Google's launch event tomorrow

Google's yearly hardware event is nearly upon us. In this day and age, there are always bits of information leaked ahead of official announcements, but this event is completely different. Google has been as leaky as the Titanic over the past few months, so there's a good chance there aren't any surprises left.

If you've been living under a rock this whole time, or you haven't been able to keep track of all the leaks, we've summarized everything we know about the products Google will (probably) announce tomorrow.

Google Pixel Slate appears in new leak, with detachable keyboard and capacitive stylus

Google can identify your pets in pictures, create augmented reality with a single rear camera, and isolate individual voices in a crowd. As we've learned over the past few weeks, what Google can not do is keep a secret. We've only seen glimpses of the company's upcoming Chrome OS tablet, but now full images have been posted by MySmartPrice.
