Google is protecting the Pixel 4 from the Pixel 4a, and it's hurting both phones

When it comes to A/B tests, Google is the de facto king. Be it chat apps, social networks, or email, Google loves to place multiple products into a virtual death match, with the prize being the chance to continue existing (or, often, just die later). This strategy has in equal parts frustrated and delighted fans over the years, because it allows Google to bring innovative and interesting products to life that otherwise would be shelved for functional duplicity. And right now, a real A/B test is taking place inside Google's smartphone division, between the flagship Pixel and the budget-tier Pixel "a" series.

First Pixel 4a video leak reveals Snapdragon 730, 6GB of RAM, and 3080mAh battery

Remember when a few pre-production Pixel 4 units fell off a truck last year and were extensively reviewed long before the official release of the phone? Well, it happened again, only this time it's the Pixel 4a. Just a day after some low-res images of the handset leaked, Cuban technology blog TecnoLike Plus has released a six and a half minutes long Spanish overview of the yet-to-be-released phone.

Verizon may sell the Pixel 4a and 5 after all (Update and retraction)

Verizon may sell the Pixel 4a and 5 after all (Update and retraction)

Late last night, I posted a story claiming Verizon was closing up shop on its relationship with Google and the Pixel. As of this morning, I'm retracting that claim, because the previously reliable source from which I received it—a source that I know and trust, and provided information from a variety of contexts and sources—was incorrect. While I'm unable to share more specific information, I have extremely good reason to believe that source was working with inaccurate, unreliable, or outdated information (or all three), which led to a conclusion which is not supported in reality.

At this time, it is our belief that Verizon's statement, repeated below for the sake of convenience, is the best possible guidance on the carrier's plans as regard the Pixel phones in 2020.

Frontrunner emerges among potential Pixel 4a codenames, helping to narrow down hardware expectations (Updated)

Frontrunner emerges among potential Pixel 4a codenames, helping to narrow down hardware expectations (Updated)

A report from XDA Developers today cites the existence of three codenames potentially related to Google's upcoming affordable smartphones (or phone), and evidence discovered alongside those names paints a more confusing picture of the situation than ever. The long and short of it: there could be two Pixel 4a variants after all, and one of them could support 5G.

According to XDA, the three codenames of note are sunfish, redfin, and bramble. Sunfish is allegedly equipped with a Snapdragon 730, a 4G-only Qualcomm chipset for mid-range phones. This makes sense: the Snapdragon 730 is the logical successor to the Snapdragon 670 found in the Pixel 3a and 3a XL, and probably carries a pretty similar price tag.

The Pixel 4a is putting Google in an unwinnable war — with itself

The Pixel 4a is putting Google in an unwinnable war — with itself

I don't think it meant to, but Google has backed itself into a corner with the anticipated Pixel 4a. The previous Pixel 3a was a smash-hit of a phone, doubling the company's phone sales amid some serious troubles. The 3a was so great it even earned our 2019 Smartphone of the Year accolade over the company's "flagship" Pixel 4 series. But based on what we've heard so far, I think the upcoming Pixel 4a could be a disaster for Google.

New rumor says there will only be one Pixel 4a variant, no XL version this year

The Pixel 4a rumor mill is picking up some current after last week's OnLeaks renderpalooza. YouTuber Dave Lee, also known as Dave2D, has posted unattributed claims about the upcoming series of budget phones — including word that the 4a may not even be a series, but a singular model.

First Pixel 4a renders show off hole-punch display, good ol' fingerprint sensor, and 3.5mm jack

One of our audience's most anticipated smartphones of 2020 may come from, of all places, Google. While the Pixel 4 has been a critical flop (though it also was our readers' choice), the Pixel 3a was championed as an all-around utility unit by almost every corner of the Android geekdom. Now, we're getting what might be our first look at the phone to supersede that one — a Pixel 4a, if you will.
