Google has no immediate plans to open Motion Sense API to third-party devs

The Pixel 4's Soli radar chip and Motion Sense features have made the news multiple times over the past weeks. From questionable utility to restrictions and resulting quirks, we've learned that this new technology comes with a few asterisks, but we didn't know whether developers would be able to tap into it. Google has now told us that an API isn't currently in the plans.

Magnetic mounts can play nice with wireless charging on the Pixel 4

Magnetic mounts can play nice with wireless charging on the Pixel 4

Wireless charging is one of the few benefits of having a glass-backed phone: it doesn't work through metal, but it does through glass. That limitation in materials may be concerning for folks that want to use steel plates for magnetic mounts, but in our own testing, you can actually squeak by with both so long as you put the plate in the right spot.

Your Pixel 4 box has a cool Google Lens-enabled Easter egg

Your Pixel 4 box has a cool Google Lens-enabled Easter egg

There’s simply no dearth of Easter eggs across Google’s software products. This penchant for hidden quirks appears to have found its way into the newest Pixel range with a cool new Easter egg that involves a Pixel 4 retail box, Google Lens, and some AR chops. This one, however, isn’t as engaging as Google app’s Flappy Bird-like game, but it’s still interactive enough to serve Google’s marketing purpose.

How to keep the Pixel 4's Always-on Display always on

With the Pixel 4 finally shipping to users and reaching more and more hands, we're starting to get wind of a few quirks we didn't expect. Due to the new Soli radar chip, some features you may have grown accustomed to might behave differently, like lockscreen notifications being hidden and the Always-on display automatically turning off after about 30 seconds.

Moment Pixel 4 cases up for pre-order, all lenses up to 20% off through Oct 31st

Most people don't bother to carry a dedicated camera with them anymore, not since smartphones basically obliterated the market for point-and-shoot cameras. With the launch of the Pixel 4, we're even seeing more impressive zooming capabilities and shooting modes that deserve all of the attention they're getting. However, if you're missing the ultra wide lens or want to push beyond the 8x zoom, or if you have another phone that still has room to improve, it might be time to slip on a lens to achieve that extra optical breathing room. Moment is running a sale that will net up to 20% off on all of its lenses, and if you ordered a Pixel 4 in either size, now is also a great time to get an order in for a Photo Case to go with it.

The Pixel 4 hides lock screen notifications, but you can re-enable them

The Pixel 4 hides lock screen notifications, but you can re-enable them

The Pixel 4 and 4 XL make significant changes to how you unlock your phone. The venerable fingerprint sensor is gone, replaced by Google's fancy face unlock system. It works pretty well, but Google prioritizes fast unlocking over everything else. That means (among other things) you can't interact with lock screen notifications. So... Google hides them. If you don't like that behavior, there are some alternatives.

Enpass and Bitwarden allow authentication using Pixel 4’s face unlock

Google’s newest pair of flagships did away with a rear-facing fingerprint reader in favor of a more sophisticated face unlock. Password manager apps fall under the category that can benefit the most from its added security (arguable), and they’re indeed leading the way. Taking a cue from Lastpass, Enpass and Bitwarden have now joined the small list of password managers that support Pixel 4’s biometric authentication.

Live Caption on Pixel 4 works even on muted videos, only pops up when needed

Live Caption is one of the most impressive features coming to Android. It automatically transcribes anything being said in a video or audio on your screen for you to read, and can be an invaluable tool for hearing-impaired users — plus it could avoid awkward glances if you raise the volume too much in public. Now that the feature has launched exclusively on the Pixel 4, everyone has been trying it out and discovering a few nice, and perhaps unexpected aspects of it.

[Update: Now in stable] LastPass beta supports Android 10’s biometrics API, enabling face unlock for Pixel 4 owners

LastPass is just one of many password managers out there, though it has one of the most generous pricing schemes to offer. Its Android application has always been fairly modern and is known to quickly include new OS features in its beta, like Oreo's autofill API and Marshmallow's new app permission model. Today, the firm continues this commitment by announcing it'll support Android 10's biometrics, meaning you'll be able to unlock the app with Pixel 4's face authentication.

Pixel 4 factory images now available for download

It might seem like Google's Pixel 4 and 4 XL have been around for months, given the volume of leaks and early shipments, but today was actually meant to mark formal availability for the new phones. In addition to the hardware, today also marks availability for the Pixel 4 and 4 XL's software, as Google has just uploaded factory images and full OTA files for both phones.
