Dynamic System Updates arrive for the Pixel 3 and 3 XL in Android Q Beta 4

Last year, Google speculated it might be possible for Android devices to boot a GSI (Generic System Image) without needing to unlock the bootloader and flash it. That functionality was shown off as working just recently at this year's Google I/O developer conference, under the name "Dynamic System Updates," or DSU. (It's not the most descriptive name, since DSU effectively lets you live boot into other Android images.) We were told the functionality would eventually make its way to Android Q, and as of Beta 4, it has.

Downloads for Android Q Beta 4 are now live, including the Pixel 3a and 3a XL

Android Q Beta 4 has just been released, and while those of us in the Beta Program wait for OTAs to roll out via the more traditional (and slower) means, images for manual flashing are also available — though they don't get updates. If you're chomping at the bit to test out Beta 4, you can pull them down now.

[Update: Starting to roll out] Pixel updates for June are up, 3a and 3a XL get their first monthly security patches

It's the first Monday of a new month, and that means Google's Pixels are getting their regular security patches. Downloads for both full factory images and sideloadable OTAs are up and available while we wait for the update to roll out via the more traditional means — which usually takes at least an hour or two. Pixel functional patches for this month's update include a few fixes, as well as improved hotword detection for the "Ok Google" command. The Pixel 3a also joins its forebears in picking up its first ever monthly security updates.

Netflix officially certifies 23 more phones and tablets, brings HDR to OnePlus 7/7 Pro

Due to the Netflix app's use of DRM and other restrictive technologies, not every Android phone or tablet can automatically watch movies and shows in HD. In most cases, Netflix has to certify each device for HD playback, and run additional tests to make sure HDR works. The company has now certified 23 new phones and tablets for HD playback, and brought HDR compatibility to a handful of phones.

Google quietly removed custom 'My Case' option for Pixels from its store

When you get a new phone, you almost certainly want to protect it from drops and scuffs by putting it in a case. For most popular devices, you can choose from a sheer infinite amount of options, but most of them are neither individual nor too pretty and only good for what they need to be good at – they shield your device from damage. Google took another approach and added the ability to customize the look of your Pixel phone protector with its "My Case" program. However, coinciding with the launch of the Pixel 3a, the company quietly took away these custom options from the Pixel 3.

[Update: RAW in Night Sight] Google Camera update brings Time Lapse mode to existing Pixels [APK Download]

In his review of the Pixel 3a yesterday, David mentioned a new Timelapse mode for taking pictures at an interval and creating a video of them. The mode is now rolling out to existing Pixels via an update to the Google Camera app. We've verified that it's there on the Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 2XL, and Pixel 1 and will update with more devices once we test this further.

T-Mobile won't support RCS messaging on the Pixel 3 or 3a

The text messages we all used over the years are archaic and clunky, but RCS promises to modernize messaging with features like read receipts and file transfers. However, implementing RCS through the carriers has been an utter mess. Case in point: T-Mobile says the new Pixel 3a and 3a XL won't have RCS support on its network. We can safely assume the existing Pixel 3 and 3 XL (also now available from T-Mobile) will be the same.

Android Q Beta 3 brings classic navigation buttons to the Pixel 3

Google has been reworking navigation on Android for a few years. Android 9 Pie launched with gesture navigation, and to help speed along adoption, Google didn't officially allow Pixel 3 owners to switch back to the original three-button navigation scheme. However, Beta 3 of Android Q comes with a nice surprise — the original buttons are back.

[Update: OTA, 3a images] Android Q Beta 3 is now available, delivers plenty of new features

Following our previous expectations and just in time for developers in attendance at the ongoing I/O developer conference, Google has just pushed out downloads for Android Q Beta 3.
