Pixel phones can now vibrate before ramping up the volume

Starting this month, Pixel owners will gain an additional sound option that controls how their phones behave when a call comes in. Awkwardly referred by Google as the ramping ringer feature, it lets the phone vibrate for a few seconds first before the ringtone volume goes up in an increasingly louder fashion.

Get a new 64GB Pixel 3 for just $440

The Pixel 4 isn't quite a runaway success, especially the smaller version with its limited battery capacity. If you were holding out for an upgrade, last year's Pixel 3 is still a solid choice, especially now that it's on sale for one of the lowest prices we've seen yet.

How to enable Rules on Android 10 with root

Before Android 10's official release, an automation feature called "Rules" was discovered during the beta phase that many hoped would make its way into the final build of the OS. Although it didn't appear as feature-rich as Tasker, it seemed like a good starting point for Google to build on. After being absent for a while, the Rules feature began popping up for certain Android 10 Pixel users as a server-side update. If you'd rather not wait for Google to activate the feature for you, there is a short and simple method available now, assuming you have a rooted Pixel phone running Android 10.

Google's November patches out: First update for Pixel 4, 2016 Pixels left behind

Monthly security patches for November 2019 are out for Google's Pixels — including the latest Pixel 4 and 4 XL. This marks the first major monthly update for the pair of phones, and they're getting a few fixes with it, too. In addition to the generally enhanced security, the Pixel 4 and 4 XL are getting some camera tweaks and improvements to Smooth Display, likely tied to previous oddities observed in the feature.

Tip: Double tap the Live Caption overlay to see more lines of text

Live Caption is one of the most interesting features introduced on the Pixel 4, and it's great that it's coming to the Pixel 3 and 3a line, as well. By default, it only shows you two lines of live-transcribed text, which might be enough in most circumstances. But if you ever need to see more context, you can double tap the overlay to make it display eight lines of text.

The new Pixel 4 has launched with some awesome photography chops that make owners of previous generations of the device jealous. Live Caption on Pixel 4 works even on muted videos, only pops up when needed

Live Caption is one of the most impressive features coming to Android. It automatically transcribes anything being said in a video or audio on your screen for you to read, and can be an invaluable tool for hearing-impaired users — plus it could avoid awkward glances if you raise the volume too much in public. Now that the feature has launched exclusively on the Pixel 4, everyone has been trying it out and discovering a few nice, and perhaps unexpected aspects of it.

Google Pixel 4 vs Pixel 3: What's new?

At its big annual hardware event on October 15, Google unveiled its latest flagship phones alongside a new Nest Mini speaker, a Nest Wifi update, the Pixelbook Go, and a second-generation pair of Pixel Buds (no wires, finally) that don't actually launch until spring next year. The Pixel 4 and 4 XL have a lot going for them, even if the battery life is more than a little concerning. You can learn more about that by reading our full review, but if you're wondering exactly what's changed since last year's Pixel 3, you're in the right place.

Don't hold your breath for Android 10 TWRP on the Pixel 3 and 4

A custom recovery such as TWRP allows you to install custom ROMs and root your devices more easily. Unfortunately, the development of the software for the Pixel 4 and 3 on Android 10 has hit major roadblocks. Some changes in Google's implementation of the recovery and personal circumstances of the main contributor to TWRP could mean that it'll take a while until it's available.

Pixel 4's Live HDR+ and Dual Exposure Control won't come to Pixel 3 and 3a

The Pixel 4 has some impressive new camera tricks up its sleeve, such as live HDR+ previews and Dual Exposure Controls, that should help you shoot even more stunning images than you could with its predecessors. Even though these features seem like they must be purely software-related, apparently they aren't. That's why they won't come to the older Pixels, as Google has just stated on Twitter.
