Google details new Assistant features coming soon to Pixel phones

During the course of the big Google hardware event on October 9th we heard about a number of new features, most relating to the three main products being unveiled — Pixel 3, Pixel Slate, and Home Hub. As the dust has mostly settled, Google thought it might be a good time to run us through some of the new features coming to Assistant on Pixel phones, new and old.

Nacho Notch could help you cope with the Pixel 3 XL's big honkin' display cutout

It's not so much that we like them, but in late 2018, we're getting used to notches on the whole. The Pixel 3 XL's bizarrely tall cutout, though, is particularly irksome. You can toggle it off in the phone's developer options, but doing so means the screen space on either side goes unused. Nacho Notch can black out the area on either side of the notch while still letting it show status bar icons.

[Update: Code commit] The Pixel 3 uses Samsung's super-fast F2FS file system

All the way back in 2012, Samsung created a new file system purpose-built for flash-based storage, called 'F2FS'. It's typically faster on smartphones than the ext4 file system that most Android devices use, but it has suffered from reliability issues over the years. Google apparently thinks it's ready for prime-time though, as the Pixel 3 and 3 XL both use F2FS for local storage.

One of my favorite cases for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL was Google's fabric case. However, being an official accessory, it's not cheap and goes for $40 a pop. Verizon is already offering the model for the Pixel 3 and 3 XL up for pre-order with a 25% discount, equating to a price of $30.74.

Google has now officially hopped on the notch train with the Pixel 3 XL. Not only does it have it, it's a big notch. Google points out that the Pixel 3 XL still has a notch toggle in the developer options, but its way of hiding it is a bit different than other notch-hiding phones.

Google announced the Pixel 3 and 3 XL yesterday, and there was a lot to unpack even though we knew basically everything about the phones from leaks. Sometimes the small stuff can fall through the cracks on announcement day, but some potential buyers were concerned about several apparently missing LTE bands. Now, Google confirms support is either already available or coming soon.

For the past few years, Wikipad has sold its Gamevice detachable controllers which work with several Samsung Galaxy models and iPhones. The Google devices were sadly left out of the fray, until now as the company released a version that supports the Pixel 2, 3, and their XL variants.

Pixel 3 and 3 XL are guaranteed Android version and security updates until October 2021

Before the Pixel 2 and 2 XL, Google had a habit of promising its Nexus and Pixel devices Android version updates for two years, but security fixes for three. That changed with the second-generation Pixels, which were guaranteed both types of updates for three years. The Pixel 3 family will benefit from the same courtesy.
