Google Photos v3.7 ends ambiguity around Pixel 2's free original quality storage offer [APK Teardown]

Google Photos v3.7 ends ambiguity around Pixel 2's free original quality storage offer [APK Teardown]

Google launched a pretty cool promotion in 2016 with the offer to store every photo and video taken on Pixels at original quality. The same promotion will apply this year with the release of the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, but it now comes with a catch: The promotion expires in the year 2020.

Unfortunately, the phrasing of the new terms left room for interpretation, leaving many people concerned that all of their uploaded photos would suddenly count against their storage quota or may be converted to lower quality once the expiration date hit. Thanks to a teardown of the latest Google Photos update, we have definite confirmation that both your photos and your storage quota will remain safe and unmolested.

[Deal Alert] Best Buy is already knocking $100 off the Pixel 2 and $25 off the Pixel 2 XL (Verizon models)

Google unveiled its latest and greatest phones yesterday at its big event in San Francisco, as you'll all be well aware of by now. Anyone wanting a piece of the action has to first work out if they can afford it, as these things aren't cheap. If you live in the US and you buy the phones directly from Google, you're looking at paying $649 for the Pixel 2 or $849 for the Pixel 2 XL (64GB models). That's a pretty penny, but there are already ways to bring the cost down a bit.

The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have USB-C digital audio, so your third-party USB-C headphones need to support that too

The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have USB-C digital audio, so your third-party USB-C headphones need to support that too

USB-C was supposed to be this savior of all ports, a be-all-end-all of sorts, but so far, I'm honestly lost with the acronyms. USB-C, 3.0 and 3.1 and 3.2, USB-C PD, VESA DisplayPort Alternate Mode, USB SuperSpeed+, and so on... It's becoming increasingly impossible to tell what each one means and what you need to have on your device to make sure it supports fast charging, fast data transfers, external displays, and audio playback.

Here's one more for you to worry about: Digital Audio. If you want your Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL to play music on your third-party USB-C headphones, you need to make sure those support digital audio.

The camera in Google's new Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL looks to be its best yet

Last year's Pixel was found to be one of the best all-around smartphone cameras. In fact, according to Google, Pixel users take 2x more photos than iPhones, on average. The camera tradition looks to have continued with the latest series of Pixel phones. Of course, you all know what we think about DxOMark. But even so, it appears that the Pixel 2 scored an incredible 98 overall, making it the best phone camera (again) it's ever reviewed.
