Google Home can now set alarms with music instead of that obnoxious beeping

Google Home can now set alarms with music instead of that obnoxious beeping

The default alarm tone for the Google Home may leave a tiny bit to be desired, but thankfully Google has just introduced an alternative: you can now set your next alarm to play music instead. So the next time you need to set an alarm for an impromptu nap or that bird in the oven, you can be jerked back to awareness with something a bit more entertaining.

Google Home adds maxdome as a video provider in Germany

Google Home adds maxdome as a video provider in Germany

Google Home is available in a few countries, but if you live anywhere outside the US, your choice for a video provider is quite limited. Telling Home to play a video from YouTube, Google Photos, or Netflix works in all countries, but that's it. The US gets CBS, CW, Viki, and YouTube TV, but other countries don't have any local content providers. Beside Australia, that is, which has Stan and now Germany is adding maxdome (it should work though it hasn't shown up in this list yet).

[Update: 2 Home Minis for $37.49] Deal alert: Verizon Business customers can get a Google Home Max and Home Mini for just $337.48 (25% off)

Like many Google products, the Home Max isn't easy to find at a discount, especially given its very recent entry to the market. However, Verizon Business is offering a Home Max and Home Mini bundle for just $337.48, or $112.50 off the combined MSRPs of both Home devices. That's pretty nuts. Unfortunately, you will need access to a Verizon Business (B2B) account to take advantage of this deal. And no, your run-of-the-mill Verizon account won't do.

[Update: Beta update rolling out, downloads] Google says a fix is coming on January 18th for Wi-Fi problems associated with Cast devices

A few days back we reported that the Google Home Max (among other Cast-enabled devices) might be connected with some recent reports for widespread Wi-Fi troubles. Google designer Ivy Ross shows off prototypes of Pixel 2, Pixelbook, Home Mini, and more

Prototypes are always cool to see, but us consumers don't often get to do so. It's nice to take a look at how the designs of products evolve from the drawing board all the way to our homes, pockets, and backpacks. An interview with Google hardware designer Ivy Ross recently went up on The Keyword, and embedded within are photos of several Google products' prototypes.

Taking a page from Kindle, Amazon’s Alexa is everywhere—can Google's Assistant catch up?

Taking a page from Kindle, Amazon’s Alexa is everywhere—can Google's Assistant catch up?

When Amazon upended the publishing industry with the advent of the Kindle, it also paved the way for an approach to luring consumers into a larger sphere of influence, a strategy that is now being successfully adapted for the new age of smart speakers and digital assistants. Both the Kindle and the Echo provide consumers with valuable services, encouraging them to shop and receive content within Amazon's ecosystem. Most of the experiences of its Kindle and Echo hardware also come in the form of apps or services that appear on other manufacturers' devices without additional charge to the consumer, making that connection even stronger.

[Deal Alert] Save a few bucks on select Google Home and Chromecast Ultra combos, I guess ($10-$30 off)

Google is offering discounts on particular combinations of its Google Home and Chromecast hardware, but the deals are just kind of okay, and frankly a bit of a letdown with all the big price slashes from the holidays still fresh in our memories.

[Weekend Watch] You should see this adorable video of a grandma goo-gooing at a Google Home Mini

[Weekend Watch] You should see this adorable video of a grandma goo-gooing at a Google Home Mini

Some videos are just too awesome to not be shared and this one falls right into that category. It's a grandma (she's Italian, you'll notice some Italian dialect in the video) figuring out how to use a Google Home for the first time, and the whole video is filled with her saying "Hey Goo-Goo, Okay Goo-Goo." It's just adorable.

Opinion: Google has quietly become one of the world's most important hardware companies

Opinion: Google has quietly become one of the world's most important hardware companies

As we say goodbye to 2017, I'd like you to think back to five years ago - specifically, Google five years ago. At that time, if I had told you Google was one of the world's most important consumer electronics manufacturers, you'd probably have laughed at me.

Mentally put yourself in 2012: Google's just announced the fourth Nexus phone, the Nexus 4, running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, along with the Nexus 10 tablet. At Google I/O six months prior, it unveiled the Nexus Q - a device intended to be some sort of smart entertainment hub... and proceeded to cancel its public launch.

[Update: More details] New Google Home Mini update 1.29 restores top tap functionality with long-press on the side

[Update: More details] New Google Home Mini update 1.29 restores top tap functionality with long-press on the side

The Google Home Mini is a super-affordable way to get Google Assistant in your life, but Google was forced to hobble the device shortly after launch because a sticky touch sensor caused Artem's Mini to record everything he said. Part of that functionality is now coming back with a small tweak. Instead of tapping the top of the device, you'll be able to long-press the side.
