Essential Phone March update adds Digital Wellbeing

Things have slowed down for Essential, which launched its only phone about 18 months ago. The company is at least doing a good job of keeping that phone up to date. After a shockingly quick Pie update, Essential has stayed on top of monthly patches. In the latest OTA, the Essential Phone is getting Google's Digital Wellbeing.

Essential just brought Newton Mail back from the dead, back to old $50/year pricing

In somewhat of a strange move, phone manufacturing startup Essential purchased CloudMagic in December of last year. CloudMagic's primary product was Newton Mail, a cross-platform mail application that cost $50/year to use, which shut down last August. Now it seems Essential has revived Newton Mail, as the service is once again online and functional.

Essential Audio Adapter HD review: High-end sound for the PH-1 won't do jack to help Essential

Essential's PH-1 was criticized at launch for some valid reasons, like a mediocre camera, high price tag, and lack of a headphone jack. But great software and a falling price have earned it a small but impassioned cult following. Now the high-end niche phone from 2017 has a high-end niche audio accessory to go with it: the Audio Adapter HD. But a single-device, $150 external DAC/amp might be a bit too niche.

Essential acquires CloudMagic, the company behind now-shuttered email app Newton Mail

Misery loves company, and Essential has just bought some. CloudMagic's eponymous email app was once a pretty appealing offering with an unbeatable price tag of free. That was before it was rebranded as Newton Mail and had a hefty $49.99 annual subscription fee slathered on it in September 2016. As you can guess, that didn't go over very well, and Newton Mail was officially put out of its misery on September 25th. Now Essential, a startup with a not-so-glamorous trajectory of its own, has acquired CloudMagic. The financial terms of the deal are unclear.
