Unlocked phones are great. You can take them to whichever carrier you desire, you usually have greater control over software modification, and you don't have to deal with contracts. Amazon seems to think so, too; as a result, it's running an "Amazon Unlocked Phone Event" that starts today, with discounts on Sony Xperia, LeEco, Lenovo, ASUS, and Coolpad smartphones.The discounts range from $40 on the lower-priced devices to $125 on the more expensive ones, but they're all pretty solid price reductions. Black Friday and Cyber Monday may have come and gone, but tons of great deals are still out there. Case in point: ASUS's photography-oriented ZenFone Zoom is on sale from both B&H and Newegg for $199. That's the same deal that ASUS offered on Black Friday, and a whopping $200 off its MSRP of $399, effectively making the phone half-price.

After it was announced in January 2015, it took over a year for it to be launched in the good ole US of A at a not-unreasonable price of $399. ASUS is working hard to meet its self-imposed deadline of upgrading several ZenFone devices to Marshmallow before the end of Q2 2016. We're technically in July and Q3 already, but we'll give the company a little leeway for almost-making it on time with these two new OTAs.

- ASUS has posted the news to its website adding one more piece of information. The ZenFone Zoom will be launching February 1st exclusively on B&H. At this point, it's not clear whether the exclusivity will remain or other retailers will offer the phone later on.
A full year after its announcement at CES 2015, the ASUS ZenFone is ready to make its grand public debut on US territory. The phone, which looks like an amalgam of an Android phone and a Lumia 1020, touts some very interesting and rare, if not unique, features and it will officially launch in the US in early February for $399.
Android device makers have experimented with all manner of camera gimmicks over the years, all the while ignoring some very basic features that regular cameras have always had. Case in point, optical zoom. The newly announced Asus ZenFone stands out with a rear-facing 13MP camera and 3x optical zoom.
