ASUS’ gaming phone lineage started in 2018 with the launch of its first ROG-branded phone developed on the lines of the company’s acclaimed gaming PC series. It came running Android Oreo and was expected to receive the update to Pie sometime this year, but this plan encountered several roadblocks and delays. The original ROG Phone is finally getting the anticipated Android Pie firmware more than two weeks after ASUS began beta testing Android 10 for its follow-up.

(Update: Stable rollout) Android 10-based ZenUI 6 for ASUS ZenFone 5Z enters public beta

Android 10 beta testing for ASUS’ last two flagships — the ZenFone 6 and the ZenFone 5Z — is already underway since August, though only for a small, closed group. The early ZenUI version for the 5Z reportedly came laden with a long list of bugs that essentially held off its public release for a while. ASUS appears to have addressed many of those flaws, and is now making the ZenUI 6 open beta available to a wider userbase of its 2018 flagship.

ASUS’ ROG Phone 2 is an absolute beast of a phone owing to its 120Hz AMOLED display, 6000mAh battery, and of course the Snapdragon 855 Plus chip. The niche gaming phone now stands next in line to receive the newest flavor of Android, after its mainstream ZenFone-branded peers underwent a similar treatment not too long ago. ASUS has begun taking applications for Zen UI closed beta from anyone meeting a prescribed set of requirements.
