Sony Releases Pure AOSP For The Xperia Z To Its GitHub, Encourages Developers To Hack Away

Back in August of '12, Sony teamed up with Google to make the Xperia S an officially supported AOSP device. The project initially got off to a decent start, but after an issue with some proprietary software binaries that couldn't be released by either Sony or Google, the project was canned on the official side and moved to Sony's GitHub, where it can still be found today.

Now, the company is doing something similar with the Xperia Z, minus Google's interaction from the get-go.

Sony Adds Binaries For The Xperia Z1 And Z2 With A Unified Kernel To The AOSP For Xperia Project

Sony's relationship with "pure" Android is an interesting one. As a company they generally make it easy to root or otherwise modify their phones or tablets, with a few notable qualifiers. The AOSP for Xperia project, which provides the basic tools for building standard Android ROMs on popular devices, is also one way that Sony stays relevant for those who buy phones with the intent to add aftermarket software. Today it gets two new flagship options, the older Xperia Z1 and Z2.

You can find the binaries for both new phones on the SonyXperiaDev GitHub. They're classified by codename: "Honami" is the Xperia Z1 while "Sirius" is the Z2.

Sony Lists The First Devices To Get Android 4.3 Updates, AOSP For Xperia Tablet Z Already Posted To GitHub

It's been less than 24 hours since Google announced Jelly Bean 4.3 and published the new code to the Android Open Source Project, and Sony is already talking up their plans for phone updates. That's what I call customer service! In a short blog post, Sony confirmed a 4.3 update for six of their latest phones and (one) tablets:

This isn't necessarily an exhaustive list, and no timeframe has been announced. Other devices may get updated - and given Sony's decent record with Android updates, I would expect more phones to be announced soon - but these six already have their tickets punched.

Sony Opens Up The SmartWatch, Encourages Developers To Create Alternative Firmware

Sony wants to make sure that you remember they've got a smartwatch, what with all these Pebbles, Agents, and every other Johnny-come-lately crowding the market. They may have found the perfect vector for getting their somewhat aged Bluetooth watch back in the spotlight, at least among die-hard Android power users: custom ROMs. Sony is now officially condoning hacks and modifications to the SmartWatch, as detailed on their Developer World blog.

SmartWatchDFU_660x384

They're calling it the Open SmartWatch Project, a portal for developers to bone up on the basics and download all the tools they need to create pint-sized, flashable builds of the SmartWatch software, or indeed, something entirely new.
