Google has been working on implementing live filters and effects for Duo video calls over the course of the past couple of years. We've seen a few of them pop up for special holidays like Holi and Valentine's Day, but today, we finally have a bank of 13 standard fare filters and effects to embarrass ourselves with when chatting with our colleagues, friends, and loved ones.

The latest version of Duo began rolling out to users this morning, but there haven't been any visible changes popping up in the live app. As is tradition, especially with Duo, a teardown does turn up a few of the changes we can look forward to in the future. This time, we're looking at yet another camera effect, but this one may actually stick around and make it to users. Google Duo is getting an update today, and you'll actually see some changes if you install it, even though it's really just to remove colors from the Settings screen. However, a teardown shows there's actually a lot more coming in the future, including the ability to block email, a data saver mode, and maybe even the ability to show previously recorded videos to other people.

Google's Duo video chat app was initially only available for phones, since it was tied to a person's phone number (much like WhatsApp). The ability to link a Duo number with a Google account arrived earlier this year, which enabled Duo to work on multiple devices — including tablets. For unknown reasons, Google only allowed a certain number of Chromebooks to install Duo from the Play Store, but now that limitation seems to have been removed.
