New Google Goggles v1.1 Can Translate English, French, Italian, German, And Spanish To Many Languages, We Go Hands-On

Goggles Translate (OCR)

Fresh off the press, Google just announced that the latest update to its Google Goggles for Android (1.6+) introduces a Translate feature.

The app currently supports the following input languages:

  • English
  • French
  • Italian
  • German
  • Spanish

and can translate them to a much bigger set of languages which I just jotted down (from the app itself):

  • Afrikaans
  • Albanian
  • Catalan
  • Danish
  • Dutch
  • English
  • Finnish
  • French
  • Galician
  • German
  • Icelandic
  • Irish
  • Italian
  • Norwegian
  • Portuguese
  • Spanish
  • Swedish

Google promised support for more Latin based languages soon, with non-Latin based languages coming after.

Motorola Milestone Android 2.1 Update Finally Rolls Out In The UK, Brings 9 (!) Home Screens

About 40 minutes ago, Motorola posted a message to its Motorola Europe Facebook group announcing the launch of the Android 2.1 update in the UK for the Motorola Milestone (known as the Droid to the US users).

The update is not OTA is now available both OTA (over the air) and by executing a .exe file which seems to require a Windows computer and a MicroUSB Data cable (non-Windows users are out of luck?).

Clear Reveals Two New Wi-Max Equipped Android Phones To Be Released In 2010

Corporate press releases are usually pretty boring. Corporate press releases about quarterly earnings? Well, they’re a one way ticket to snoozeville for sure, but every now and then you glean a little nugget of information that rewards you for slogging through the PR babble. In this case, Sprint’s 4G partner Clear has let slip that we can expect both HTC and Samsung to release Android powered handsets with Wi-Max on board by the end of this year.

Evo 4G Available For Pre-Order At The Shack Later This Month?

I spent about 15 minutes trying to figure out how I could open this post with a joke about Radio Shack’s abysmal name change to ‘The Shack’, but figured it’s well trodden ground at this point, so let’s just skip to the juicy bits: it appears that the gents over at Phandroid have been tipped off by an employee at the aforementioned Shack that Sprint’s Evo 4G should be available for pre-order by the end of this month.

Full Dropbox Android Application Now Available + Detailed Review

Full Dropbox Android Application Now Available + Detailed Review

Well, that was quick. Dropbox announced today that the full version of their Dropbox client (v0.9.7) is available in the Android Market. My speculation is that additional features are planned for a full 1.0 release in the near future.

Dropbox for Android

Compared to the private beta I got a chance to preview, there are a few marked differences, specifically with the file uploads. The new file upload dialog contains 6 options:

  • Take a New Picture
  • Import Picture
  • Take a New Video
  • Import Video
  • New or Stored Audio
  • Text File

Checking one of the failures from the beta, I checked the “Import Picture” option, and see that the photo albums are fixed.

Oprah Gets Her Hands On An Extremely Sexy Looking HTC EVO 4G, We Nearly Die Of Envy

Probably the most awaited phone of 2010 - the super sexy HTC EVO 4G (formerly HTC Supersonic) made an appearance today on a none other than an Oprah Winfrey show.

Sprint let her play with the device and we got to catch a quick glimpse of it, thanks to fanboydestroyer from Hawtwired.com (this is the proper credit which was apparently mishandled by some other site owners) who recorded this video from his TV:

The curves, the looks - June can't come fast enough.

Adobe Shows Off A Multi-Touch Tablet Prototype Running Flash And Air "Flawlessly"

The Web 2.0 Expo happening in San Francisco has us quite excited, as Zedomax.com, a blog revolving around technology and gadgets, has found an Android tablet prototype smoothly running Flash and Air.

As you may remember, Adobe had a bit of a falling out with Apple last month, and vowed to instead gun for Android at full speed. With that announcement, we found out that the private Air/Flash beta has been a huge success with developers, with some porting their apps from Flash/Air to Android in a matter of hours.

Latest Android Fragmentation Numbers Are In - Android 1.5 Still Leading The Pack

Latest Android Fragmentation Numbers Are In - Android 1.5 Still Leading The Pack

Google has updated the two-week survey of Android devices connecting to the Android Market again, ending yesterday, May 3, 2010.

According to their graph, 99% of users are using platform versions 1.5, 1.6 or 2.1 with the final percentage being split among some very minor releases. More than one third of Android devices are still using a build of the Android OS which is several versions old - 1.5.

With the HTC Hero and Samsung Moment 2.1 updates rumored (for the 7th time) to go out this week, this will hopefully be the last time we see 1.5 ahead of the pack.

LG Going On The Android Offensive With A New LG Ally/Iron Man 2 Promo Site

In order to promote the upcoming Iron Man 2 movie together with the LG Ally Android phone (which seems to be featured in a variety of scenes), LG yesterday launched a new Flash powered site called LGIM2.com. While the url spells out "Iron Man 2", quite a large portion of the site is actually dedicated to the Ally.
