Weekend poll: Do you use a notification mirroring service?

Weekend poll: Do you use a notification mirroring service?

Smartphone tech has come a long way over the last ten years, but a few commonly requested features are still lacking. Battery life can't be measured in weeks yet, Android still doesn't have a decent iMessage competitor, and there aren't any first-party cross-platform notification mirroring services. Some of our desires might not be reasonable, but others are. And, at least in the case of notification synchronization, there are plenty of third-party services that can fill the gap. Do you use one?

Dell Mobile Connect mirrors your phone's screen on your Dell or Alienware PC

Dell Mobile Connect mirrors your phone's screen on your Dell or Alienware PC

There are plenty of options for controlling your phone using a PC. You can use your PC's mouse and keyboard as input devices (like with DeskDock), or have your phone's screen displayed as a window (like with TeamViewer or Vysor). Partnered with Screenovate Technologies, Dell has built its own screen mirroring tool for select Dell and Alienware PCs, called 'Mobile Connect.'

What We Use, 2017 Edition: The stuff Ryan can't live without

What We Use, 2017 Edition: The stuff Ryan can't live without

I spend my days writing about technology, and I spend much of my remaining time playing with it for fun. Consequently, I have a lot of nerdy stuff that's become integral to my life, and maybe you're interested in what it all is. It's been almost two years since I did a "what we use" post, and a lot has changed. My preferred phones are different, of course, but I've fallen deep down the mechanical keyboard rabbit hole, too. Events have also conspired against me to require that I build a new desktop computer. Here are all the things (mostly keyboards) that I can't live without.

Pushbullet Competitor 'Join' Goes Paid, Introductory Price Set At $3.99

Pushbullet Competitor 'Join' Goes Paid, Introductory Price Set At $3.99

Join, by joaomgcd of many Tasker plugins and automation apps fame, has been in beta for nearly two months now. When I tried it out at launch, it already had a lot of its functionality covered, allowing your phones and computers to share things with each other: links, SMS messages, screenshots, media files, copied text, and more. The app has been getting frequent updates since then, adding Tasker integration and making it possible to send SMS from any browser without the need for a Chrome extension. You could say that Pushbullet's little brother has grown up to actually compete against it.

[Sweet Deal Alert] Samsung 64GB USB-C 3.1 flash drive is only $12.99 at Amazon and Best Buy

Some deals don't require you break your piggy jar or dig into the couch cushions for all the pennies you have lost. Take for example this Samsung flash drive. In September, we were happy when it was down to $23.99, and earlier this month we found it an awesome deal when it dropped further to $19.99. But now? Now it's just $12.99. How 'bout that?

[Who needs iMessage?] Someday you may be able to send and receive SMS using your Chromebook

[Who needs iMessage?] Someday you may be able to send and receive SMS using your Chromebook

A bit over a month ago, we heard that Chromebooks might be getting SMS notification support via something called SMS Connect, which was exciting news. The folks over at Chrome Unboxed, who initially discovered this coming functionality, just found a bit more information on the subject. Not only will we be able to see when we get an SMS, but we might even be able to read and reply to them, all from the comfort of your Chromebook.

Latest Pushbullet Update Lets You Send Picture Messages (MMS) From Your Computer

Latest Pushbullet Update Lets You Send Picture Messages (MMS) From Your Computer

Pushbullet began as a quick way to send files, links, and other data from one device to another. Along the way, the team took the infrastructure it had in place and introduced instant messaging (through a phone using SMS). Last month the feature grew to include group conversations. Today, the service has evolved to support sending picture messages.

Android Messages has broken new SMS notifications for many people since its latest update

Android Messages has broken new SMS notifications for many people since its latest update

Google fixeth and Google breaketh away. That's the mantra of any app or software update from our beloved company (we're really masochists, aren't we?). The latest update to version 2.5.207 of Android Messages seems to have broken one essential feature for a messenger app: notifications.

It looks like notifications will stop working at some point in the app, thus no longer informing you of incoming SMS: no sound, no pop-up, no vibration. The only way to know you have new messages is either if you have Pushbullet mirroring SMS to a desktop computer or by looking at the unread counter in Nova Launcher for example.

Pushbullet Adds Group Texting Support And Ability To Switch Drives While Using Remote Drive [APK Download]

Pushbullet Adds Group Texting Support And Ability To Switch Drives While Using Remote Drive [APK Download]

Pushbullet added two small, but useful, new features this morning. First, replying to group SMS from a computer or tablet is now (finally) supported. In a small gesture of holiday goodwill, Pushbullet won't count group SMS messages against the 100 message limit for non-paying users for the rest of the month.

Group texting is now available through Pushbullet's Chrome extension, Windows desktop app, and Pushbullet's website. Support for Safari, Opera, and Firefox is coming soon. Replying to group texts also requires a phone running Android 5.0 and above.

The second change Pushbullet added this morning pertains to the new remote files feature that was added earlier this month.

[Hands-On] Join Is A Neat Beta Pushbullet Alternative From Joaomgcd

[Hands-On] Join Is A Neat Beta Pushbullet Alternative From Joaomgcd

Around the Android corners, joaomgcd is known for his automation tools, most of which rely on heavy Tasker integration and require a level of tinkering that most of us lazy people can't bother with. So when Joao released his new app Join and the featureset seemed to closely mirror Pushbullet's upon close inspection, I was intrigued. Not just because of Pushbullet's latest switch to Pro plans, but because the main selling point of the service was its simplicity. That has not been Joao's strong suit — at least through a newbie's eyes, his apps always seemed a little too overwhelming.

So could Join break the mould and stand out as a capable and simple alternative to Pushbullet?
