[Update: Out of beta] Developer Joaomgcd lets you control your Arduino from Tasker with new AutoArduino Tasker plugin

[Update: Out of beta] Developer Joaomgcd lets you control your Arduino from Tasker with new AutoArduino Tasker plugin

João Dias — better known to the world as joaomgcd — has just announced the beta version of a new Tasker plugin called the AutoArduino. The AutoArduino is just the latest in a series of over a dozen apps from the developer, and it lets owners of the programmable circuit board use Tasker to control any one of its countless digital and analog pins with nothing more than an Android phone or tablet.

The video published by joaomgcd shows a fairly basic demo of the plugin being used to light up an LED in various colors, but in principle there's no reason an Arduino-savvy user couldn't use the AutoArduino to carry out more complex tasks like pouring an espresso or controlling the window blinds in their house.

Magisk v16.4 adds app shortcuts and bug fixes, breaks root for a few apps including Tasker

Magisk v16.4 adds app shortcuts and bug fixes, breaks root for a few apps including Tasker

Magisk developer topjohnwu might be off serving compulsory military service, but he's still maintained a rapid release schedule for his popular root solution. Magisk v16.4 (and Magisk Manager v5.7.0) were released over the weekend, and they add a handful of technical fixes, app shortcuts, and Android P improvements, but it isn't all smooth sailing. The latest version also removes Magisk's 64-bit binaries, which may break root support for some apps, including the very popular Tasker

Joaomgcd's AutoNotification And AutoInput Are Already Updated To Make Use Of N's Spiffy New APIs

Joaomgcd's AutoNotification And AutoInput Are Already Updated To Make Use Of N's Spiffy New APIs

Joaomgcd hates touching his phone. At least that's what I think the drive behind all of these apps he keeps developing and improving is. He's truly the man who wants to make automation as attainable of a goal as possible, and to that extent, he has built apps like AutoNotification and AutoInput that allow you to create plenty of new actions that the famous Tasker app can make use of in its automation profiles.

Joao has been working on AutoNotification and AutoInput to add plenty of new features enabled by the additional APIs brought in Android N. AutoNotification is getting custom Quick Settings tiles (feature explanation) and Quick Reply in notifications and Notification Groups (feature explanation).

Weekend poll: Do you use a notification mirroring service?

Weekend poll: Do you use a notification mirroring service?

Smartphone tech has come a long way over the last ten years, but a few commonly requested features are still lacking. Battery life can't be measured in weeks yet, Android still doesn't have a decent iMessage competitor, and there aren't any first-party cross-platform notification mirroring services. Some of our desires might not be reasonable, but others are. And, at least in the case of notification synchronization, there are plenty of third-party services that can fill the gap. Do you use one?

AutoNotification lets you add a "Mark as Read" icon to Gmail notifications

AutoNotification lets you add a "Mark as Read" icon to Gmail notifications

Joao from joaomgcd, better known for his series of "Auto-" apps and Join, is one of our favorite tinkering developers. He always manages to find a way to make Android do things it's not supposed to, and the latest "hack" he has come up with is a new "Read" button on Gmail notifications. You know how you sometimes receive emails with a few words that are easily legible from the notification without having to open the entire Gmail app, or how you get automated emails which content you already know without opening them, and you just want a quick way to mark them as read without deleting or archiving them?

Joaomgcd's Join Can Send SMS Text Messages From Any Browser, No Extension Required, After Latest Update

Joaomgcd's Join Can Send SMS Text Messages From Any Browser, No Extension Required, After Latest Update

When Pushbullet introduced its pro plan, some folks walked away upset. For some of them, Join from Tasker-plugin maker extraordinaire Joaomgcd was just the ticket. The service doesn't quite stack up feature per feature, but it does a decent job of handling the basics.

LastPass unaffected by Google's accessibility app purge

LastPass unaffected by Google's accessibility app purge

Last week, Google began sending out emails to Android app developers regarding their use of Accessibility APIs. The intended purpose of that functionality is to assist disabled users, but it is often used for other functionality (to overlay content, fill in text fields, etc) by apps like LastPass. Google said that apps using this API for anything except helping disabled users would be removed from the Play Store.

Google will remove Play Store apps that use Accessibility Services for anything except helping disabled users

Google will remove Play Store apps that use Accessibility Services for anything except helping disabled users

For years, Android has allowed apps to modify the behavior of other applications, using Accessibility Services. While the intended purpose is for developers to create apps for users with disabilities, the API is often used for other functionality (to overlay content, fill in text fields, etc.). LastPass, Button Mapper, Signal SpyTasker, and Greenify are just a few examples of applications heavily using this API.

[Hands-On] Join Is A Neat Beta Pushbullet Alternative From Joaomgcd

[Hands-On] Join Is A Neat Beta Pushbullet Alternative From Joaomgcd

Around the Android corners, joaomgcd is known for his automation tools, most of which rely on heavy Tasker integration and require a level of tinkering that most of us lazy people can't bother with. So when Joao released his new app Join and the featureset seemed to closely mirror Pushbullet's upon close inspection, I was intrigued. Not just because of Pushbullet's latest switch to Pro plans, but because the main selling point of the service was its simplicity. That has not been Joao's strong suit — at least through a newbie's eyes, his apps always seemed a little too overwhelming.

So could Join break the mould and stand out as a capable and simple alternative to Pushbullet?
