External monitor display size scaling is coming to Chrome OS

Google shows no signs of slowing down when it comes to expanding the utility of Chrome OS as a platform. We're already convinced that the operating system can be used to do real work—at least, in our workflow here at Android Police—but more useful features are still being added with each new version. The latest addition to the Chrome OS Dev Channel is a "display size" setting for external screens.

[Update: $20 price increase] Amazon is removing lock screen ads from Prime Exclusive phones

Amazon started selling devices with "Special Offers" years back with the e-ink Kindle, but that option came to Android with the "Prime Exclusive" phones. In exchange for a discounted smartphone, you got to see ads on your lock screen whenever you picked up the phone. It was annoying, sure, but many people were happy to take Amazon up on the offer. Now, Prime Exclusive phones are getting much more compelling with news that Amazon is removing the lock screen ads.

Some Moto Z2 Force owners report the ShatterShield screen layer is peeling off

The Moto Z2 Force is just the latest device to ship with Motorola's ShatterShield screen technology. That includes a plastic layer on top that won't crack, but it does scratch. That's not the only issue, apparently. Multiple owners of the Z2 Force are complaining that the top layer of the screen has a tendency to peel off after a few months of use.

T-Mobile sued after porting man's number to thieves who stole his cryptocurrency

If you're a T-Mobile customer, you might have gotten a text message from the carrier recently that warned of number porting scams. Now it's clear why Tmo is so concerned. A Washington man has filed suit against the carrier for improperly porting his number, allowing thieves to make off with his cryptocurrency. Although, with the current price of crypto, he might have been wiped out by now even if his coins weren't stolen.

[Update: Downloads are live] OnePlus begins rolling out official Oreo OTA for OnePlus 5T

OnePlus made the rather odd decision to launch its new phone in late 2017 with Android Nougat, which was a year old at the time. It said an Oreo update would arrive soon, and depending on your definition of "soon," OP has come through. Android 8.0 Oreo is rolling out now.

Chrome might begin testing a built-in Lazy Loading mechanism for images and iframes

The Chrome team seems to always be working on many ways to quicken page loading times and speed up our access to information. The latest proposed test, which hasn't been implemented yet, is a built-in Lazy Loading mechanism for images and iframes. According to the Google Chromium group, work is underway to test and implement this new feature in Chrome for Android.

What Lazy Loading really means is that the page you open will only load images and iframes above the fold (what you can see), thus speeding up the process so you're not stuck waiting for something at the bottom of the page to load.

[Turing to dust] Turing Robotics files for bankruptcy in Finland, CEO keeps promising fairy dust

If all the previous "news" coming out of the company wasn't deturing enough for you, here's another chapter in the Turing Robotic Industries saga: it has now filed for bankruptcy in Finland. The company, which started by promising an ultra-secure smartphone in 2015 with Android 5.1 but turned around and decided on Sailfish OS instead, only to keep on delaying production again and again then promise one outrageous upgrade after the other, has, surprisingly, run out of funds. Gasp.

The news came on February 3 from Finnish newspaper Salon Seudun Sanomat, which was following Turing and its CEO Steve (Syl) Chao's progress in Salo, Finland, a city that was promised a resurrection of sorts after Nokia's demise and where Turing had rented an empty warehouse for tens of thousands of euros.

[Update: APK now available] Google releases Assistant Go app on the Play Store

Back at I/O in May last year, Google announced the Android Go initiative; a less intensive version of the OS optimized for cheap phones with little RAM. This was launched in December and to go with it we've seen a number of Google apps get the Go treatment to make them smaller and less memory-hungry.

Apps like Google Maps Go, YouTube Go, Google Go, and Gboard Go are all designed to get the best performance out of the low-cost devices that are typically popular in emerging markets. There's even a brand new app called Files Go that can help you declutter your phone and maintain a healthy amount of free storage.
