Google announced an upcoming Chrome feature called Custom Tabs at I/O back in May. Today, that feature is finally launching on the Chrome Beta channel, and we've got the APK.
Custom Tabs are basically a pop-out web-view that apps can utilize to show users web pages in Chrome (where your passwords and other items are saved!) without actually fully leaving the app. This can make apps that require web-based authorization for sign-in or simply have lots of external web links a lot more convenient to use, and avoids having to use a full-on built-in webview mode that lacks all your synced Chrome information. The new Android platform version distribution numbers are up on Google's developer site, and given no data was published during the month of July, that means we've got two months of change. Lollipop continues to climb - it's up from 12.4% a full 5.7 points, now at 18.1% of all devices. KitKat actually hasn't lost much traction because of that, and actually grew a tenth of a point, now at 39.3% of all devices versus 39.2% two months ago.

The real loser is Jelly Bean, down 3.8 points, with Ice Cream Sandwich down 1, Gingerbread down 1, and Froyo hanging steady at 0.3% (diediedie). Read More
As we know, most smartphone commercials are, at best, OK. Many are less than OK, and some are just downright awful (see also: HTC-RDJ). Apple manages to score a hit every once in a while, but even their ads can come off as corny and contrived (or just boastful) sometimes.
Perhaps the greatest unicorn of all in smartphone advertising is a legitimately chuckle-worthy commercial. They're rare beasts, and even if that chuckle is from a completely WTF place (see: G Flex, ad sadly taken down), a laugh is a positive reaction. Usually. Anyway, Motorola made this new commercial for the Moto G and we all thought it was pretty funny. Read More

Like the Kindle tablets that came before it, Amazon's Fire TV Stick is built on top of a customized version of Android. You won't find the Play Store and Google apps on your television screen if you pick one up, but it's still a good way to get your hands on apps. Then, of course, there are the ever-so-important TV shows and movies.
Best Buy is currently offering the Fire TV Stick for $25. That's $15 less than the product's usual price. This also matches the amount Amazon was selling the media dongle for during its big Prime Day sale in mid-July. Read More
The tower defense genre may not have been born on mobile devices, but it's a match made in heaven. Tapping on stationary structures and slowly moving units is a gameplay style better suited to touchscreens than gamepads or, arguably, mice. The basics have been done to death by now, so developers are coming up with creative new ways to expand the genre.
In Clandestine: Anomaly (no relation to the superb Anomaly series of tower defense games), developer ZenFri has combined top-down strategy with augmented reality. Here's a game that doesn't just rely on your touchscreen, it needs your camera and GPS as well. Read More
