Google Maps gains Street View images for directions and a bottom bar for location info, directions, and more

Go check out the Google Maps app and you might notice a few things have changed since the last time you poked around. In the last couple of days, Google pushed some changes to the Maps interface that add Street View images to the directions screen. It seems there's also another change showing up on more recent versions that will also move around a few widgets on the screen.

[Pawcket Dialing] Google Phone 9.0 hides a hilarious Paw Mode easter egg

While pawking around in the latest Google Phone 9.0, our resident APK master, Cody, uncovered one unexpected piece of evidence: paws. The animal kind. Cat and dog paws had infiltrated the installation file for seemingly no reason. This of course gave him pawse as he examined all the weird ways in which they could be used then came up empty. But we wouldn't be the Android Pawlice if we didn't have secret informants ready to do the dirty work on the ground and come back with hints and sometimes answers to our investigations. And this is what we're here to talk about: the paw mystery has been solved.

Cricket Wireless $40/month plan ups data limit from 3GB to 4GB

Do you want more data allotment per month? If the answer is no, I'm not sure why you're reading Android Police and I'm starting to doubt whether we should be friends. The answer should always be yes, regardless. And to that, Cricket Wireless is upping its data allocation on its $40 monthly plan ($35 with autopay) from 3GB to 4GB.

It was only in January, a few months ago, that Cricket increased the available data on all of its plans — at the time, the $40 plan was upped from 2.5GB to 3GB. So it's nice to see the MVNO following with another bump so soon after.

Google implements further changes for developers to help protect user data

Earlier in the month, Google released an official statement on a particularly virulent phishing email imitating Google Docs that was doing the rounds. That same day, coincidentally or not, an update to the Gmail Android app added a special warning page that pops up every time a link in one of the suspect emails is clicked. Now, Google is implementing further changes to help prevent future scams of this type.

Android Pay is continuing its expansion in the US by reaching more and more banks and credit unions. At this point, most of the major players are on board, so most of what we keep seeing with each addition are small to medium regional institutions that are joining the fold.

Blogger who filmed himself playing Pokemon Go in a Russian church narrowly escapes jail

Some of you may remember a bizarre story from last year in which a Russian video blogger filmed himself playing Pokemon Go in a church and was subsequently arrested for mocking religious beliefs. Ruslan Sokolovsky has now learned his fate, narrowly escaping prison time after being handed a three-and-a-half-year suspended sentence.

Verizon out-bids AT&T for Straight Path Communications, will pay $3.1 billion for more 5G spectrum

United States carriers are spending big bucks to acquire more wireless spectrum, especially with 5G on the horizon. T-Mobile recently won a bidding war for a large chunk of the 600Mhz spectrum, and AT&T was preparing to buy Straight Path Commutations last month. However, it turns out that Verizon will be buying Straight Path instead, after winning a bidding war against AT&T.

[Update: APK Download] Google Allo can use your selfie to create a personalized sticker pack with machine learning

Selfies are a bit of a pandemic these days; it's almost impossible to get through a day without seeing at least a few on social media. Duo v11 adds support for Android O's Picture-in-Picture mode and prepares to show your call history [APK Download + Teardown]

There's a new version of Duo rolling out and this one might be a bit more interesting to those of us running the Android O Developer Preview. With this release, you can push the app into Picture-in-Picture mode, freeing your screen up for other activities. A teardown also shows that users will soon be able to check out Duo calling history, although, probably not through Duo itself.
